Only lack of experience keeps Obama from being more scandalized. Geez AAA, this guy can't even get out of the South Side of Chi-town without two biggies. Can you imagine by the time he's 60 and has 3 terms in D.C.?
Obama has character issues. It's not just Rezko and Wright but also the NAFTA/Canada/Goolsbee flap and the way Obama tries to slime out provable accusations. You nailed it best. He's just a black John Edwards.
OK, but I was focusing on their skill at extricating themselves from scandals. Of course, one big advantage the Clintons have always had is the sheer volume of scandals they are involved in. It is a challenge for the media, even if they were interested, to dig very deeply into them. Obama has had a bit of bad luck to be involved with a crazed preacher and a guy who would have fit in nicely in Al Capone's day. They are each so cartoonish that the voters get it immediately.
There is something else. Clinton always had the ability to get voters on his side during his troubles. He would turn on the charisma, look contrite and say something about criticism never feeding a hungry child. Obama tried the same routine but it fell flat, at least with voters (liberal journalists are still swooning). It came across not as endearing but as vaguely hostile and inappropriate. Voters might have wanted to give Clinton a nuggie then hug him. By contrast, they quickly stepped back from Obama.
