The founders have by design made federally elected government weak, unable to assert its authority without being challenged by layers upon layers of judicial and political entities subject to special interest groups influence. We, The People vote to elect whoever we believe will take us in the direction we want, then watch as decisions are held up in courts as long as necessary to see another election. The Trump saga is a perfect example but the MAGA crackpots have their fair share of valid, if poorly expressed, arguments to push forward against the Democrat establishment.
When nothing seems to move forward, people stop giving a crap, focus on their self interests and anarchy sets in. America is there. The great plundering is unrolling in front of our eyes, a PJ O'Rourke or Hunter S. Thompson novel live.

There are many more dictatorships in the world than democracies. Some, like Singapore, the UAE or China, are rather efficient models embraced by the majority of their population because of their redistribution capacity. Most are just excuses for a few to plunder their nation's wealth for their own benefits.

No it's you who started turning this thread political by the following statement:

America used to be the land of innovation, embraced and celebrated. But today's innovations are challenging the 100 year old entrenched pioneers that have built the country to their image. Suddenly, innovation is distrusted and ridiculed even when we invent it. We've become the worse of conservativism and watch as the rest of the world moves on to create the political economic framework to stimulate further innovation.

And then @ironchef just responded to your first political statement with more political thoughts and then you respond further with more ridiculous political statements and someone else responds further and so forth until the thread just becomes a political thread with you condemning America and at the same time praising China. This is what you ALWAYS do, putting politically-themed remarks (often putting America down) disguised as seemingly related comments when in fact, they are totally not related to the topic in hand. What has "America's conservatism and watch as the rest of the world moves on to create the political economic framework to stimulate further innovation" have to do with whether the police can issue a traffic ticket to self-driving cars?

You are too pessimistic about America and democracy.

America is diverse and getting more so everyday. We have lots of checks and balances and getting a consensus takes time. In a free society, eventually the best idea will prevail, it just takes time.

Because that is the moron who trusted the car maker. Just because something is sold (apparently and sadly) it doesn't mean it is safe, as every Tesla owner can tell you.

If you have shitty breaks and they cause an accident, it is the car owner's fault for not maintaining the vehicle in good condition.

Except that you can no more expect every single car owner to go get an engineering degree and fully reverse engineer each product that they bought.

If would be like expecting every purchaser of medicine to start up their own lab to test what they bought.

If something is being advertised and sold for a particular purpose, the sellers have a responsibility to ensure that it actually is.

When was the last time you sent your brake caliper bolts out for metallurgical testing?

In Tesla's case, some owners ignored the warning it is not self driving.

To be responsible, you have to prove malicious intend and negligence. Owner has no intend to drive on the wrong side, or speeding, intend to harm or DUI. The self driving car is approved by the USG as safe.

IMHO, the agency that approved the self driving car is more culpable.
