what is the downside to trading off a 40" monitor?

Usually the main reason would be we call that a TV not a monitor.

For reference: NEC makes a 40" monitor for $1,600 (P403-AVT)... ViewSonic makes one for $2,300 (CDP46350T)... EIZO also makes a great one and there are a bunch on NewEgg all in a similar price range.

Trading off one 40" monitor is not that much size difference (the 40" is rectangle and slightly larger) than the very traditional (and somewhat old-school) 4x (2x2) 21" square monitors hung on an ergotron stand...

If you trade from or sit close to a 40" monitor it will be just as easy on the eyes as any other monitor. However... if you sit 24-36" away from a television you will probably be blind in a month. Do your research - TV's are not designed to be sat in front of with close proximity.

If you are spending $2k on a 40" monitor go for it... if you think you are going to be slick and pick up a $300-$500 TV you probably won't be able to read in 6-months.

thanks very much, winstontj, for your input. you probably saved the eyesight of a few people. however, slick doesn't apply in this case.
