Can America become “the first successful multiethnic democracy”?

There has NEVER been a successful "multiethnic democracy". Can the U.S. be the first?

Can America become “the first successful multiethnic democracy”? Harvard scholars say the signs are not positive

The true tale of Donald Trump's journey from reality TV show character, professional wrestler wannabe, serial adulterer and supposed billionaire to president of the United States is stranger than fiction. This is a living nightmare for Trump's opponents and others terrified by the harm he is doing to American society -- and a dreamlike state of political ecstasy for Trump's supporters.

In many ways, this discord and chaos are by design. Donald Trump's voters, along with the right-wing think tanks, plutocratic monied interests, conservative media and Christian fundamentalists have long wanted to break America's political and social norms, punish those they view as not "real" Americans", gut the social safety net, destroy the commons, and ultimately the undermine the very idea of democratic government. Trump is a means to an end; he is a human political bomb.

How does one assess the health of a democracy? Is the poison that Donald Trump and the Republican Party have injected into the American body politic lethal? Is American democracy truly exceptional? Can a multi-ethnic and multiracial democracy such as the United States survive the white nationalist and white supremacist identity politics of Donald Trump and the Republican Party?

In an effort to answer these questions I spoke with Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. They are both professors of government at Harvard University and the co-authors of the widely discussed new book "How Democracies Die."

This conversation has been edited for clarity and length.

Wrong question. The real question is are the descendants of the people who founded and built this country willing to hand it over to invaders? To see the country's culture change from predominantly Christian euro to some mixture of Hispanic, African and muslim?

We are regularly treated to the sneers from the left that demographics and immigration will render whites into a politically impotent minority in their own country. If you dare to object to that vision however, you are a racist Nazi.

Clearly you didn’t read the article.

The attitude you shared is the threat to democracy in America.

Why should we be the first? Why should we even try? If "multiethnicity" is such a good thing, why isn't it being foisted around the world in all races and cultures?

Who benefits and what is it that they want that makes the destruction of (white) America a desirable goal for them?

And are we going to just knuckle under or are we going to resist?

America is already a successful multiethnic society. The question is, can that society remain successful when certain ethnicities and their government supporters decide to openly defy and break existing laws while a hand wringing congress does nothing about it? The answer is no.

Apparently you didn't comprehend my post. Democracy is a system of government based on voting. It is undermined when one side tries to tip the scales by massive immigration. Objecting to having your country stolen from you is not undemocratic.

Basically you and the author of the idiotic article are just trying to censor the opinion of people who disagree with you. Cheery up though, it has already happened in the UK and Europe, where you can be jailed for expressing skepticism about the benefits of muslim invasion.
