Calls to defund police?! Wtf epic fail

You are so right. the overwhelming amount of cops are indeed heroes. our greatest heroes are veterans and cops, not these fake outraged liberals. the biggest threat to society are wimpy white liberals who dont have the guts to march in protest in black neighborhoods where many citizens are held hostage by thugs. they are spineless cowards.

There's a second way to look at this.

The police consume a large budget and have a vested interest in the creation of escalation. Quite a sum of their funding comes from the need for them to be first responders in situations with drug addicts, suicidal people, and other mental health issues. Coincidentally, these people are also highly likely to be brutalized, or in many cases, killed in cold blood by a cop that "just wants to get home safe".

Instead some of the funds given to the police for these purposes can be re-purposed to fund social programs, drug rehabilitation, and therapy for at-risk populations. In other words, identifying at-risk populations and providing them help and support before the police have the opportunity to brutalize a person who may not even be in total control of their actions. A secondary benefit of this is without as much funding the police also won't be able to deploy bearcats and MRAPs to seize half a pound of weed.

Defunding as a method of re-routing funds to better social programs for at-risk populations is a net good for all. The police have demonstrated they are incompetent at being social workers and so they do not deserve the money they get from these programs.
My wife was an EMT in East Tampa (rough part of town) and now is a fire medic with the county. The abuse she had to take and the entitled attitudes of those calling 911 for insanely trivial things (mainly as an EMT) is crazy. Need a ride across town...call 911. Need a fix...call 911 with the correct symptoms (and potentially turn violent when denied drugs). I can tell you having police officers at the ready is an absolute must...shit can go sideways very quickly when handling a lot of these calls.

These ass clowns in Minneapolis that want to disband the police and start over
with something "that will keep us safe" lol.

Yeah, thats called a police department!

They try to make it sound transformational but really all they are saying
is we want to rehire.

And where are these new amazing super cops going to come from
that are going to stop criminals with their intellect?

And the car wash down the street would love to replace there employees
with Ivy League grads but ummm good luck with that.

This is a wonderful idea. The police are ill equipped to handle the many situations where mental instability, alcoholism and drug use is at the center of a disturbance. We need a very different response, and very different facilities than jails, for these situations then what, in many communities, we have now.

We should also consider hiring somewhat fewer police officers, paying the ones we have more, requiring better training and education, and holding them to a higher standard of conduct and ethics.

All of these problems that have for so many years been ignored and swept under the rug are coming to the surface. It leaves one weak to realize how very much revision and fundamental change is sorely needed.

Yeah, great idea. After the Freddie Gray riots, the police have stepped back. Its done wonders for the murder rate of Baltimore hasn't it.

Rather than "strangers armed with guns," the organization says, first responders should be mental health providers, social workers, victim advocates and other community members in less visible roles.

9-1-1: What's your emergency?

Me: There are two guys trying to break down my door saying they want to rob everything and fuck my dog

9-1-1: Hold on sir, I have social worker en route to talk to the criminals about what they are doing and a therapist for your dog to handle what is about to happen.

You'd think people who save lives (Nurses, Doctors, EMTs, Firefighters) would be the actual heroes. Or teachers who have to put up with your snot nosed entitled brat for hours every single day for less pay than a starbucks manager.

American hero worship is more of a cult. As an American I don't really understand it at all. But hey, if you want to lick the boot of someone who would club you to death for interrupting their lunch who am I stop you and your cult from doing it.

True. But it would be different personnel. Union contracts would have prevented them from wholesale replacing officers. They want to do an end-around the contract. Probably won't hold up during arbitration/in a NLRB hearing/in court.

It's both.

They probably don't have to be amazing, super cops. They probably just have to respect citizens; avoid excessive force; be truthful; follow the rules; and intervene during a crime, etc.; even if it's being committed by an 'officer.'

You'll find them where you find people to employ. The same places cops came from before being hired and trained.

Cunty biker gangs trying to act tough. lol how ironic as their pockets are probably overflowing with meth for dealing in town.
