California never was mexican. It was spaniard territory, just like texas etc. Mexico took those areas for just 14 years, they never did anything there. Every single name, church etc given in those states was thanks the Spanish empire.

Depends on how far back you want to go. Not sure where the word Mexico came from, but there were people living in what is now called California before the Spaniards ever arrived. There are still pockets in Mexico where the indigenous people still live and they speak their own language which is not Spanish.California never was mexican.
