California dreamin'

A good friend of mine recently moved from San Luis Obispo (SLO) to Lake Travis (Austin). He is a retired Cal Poly comp. sci. professor with a couple of patents, so it was probably so he could keep more of his money. I visited him in SLO about 15 years ago and loved the place. Stosh

Then I will find it hard to hear you crowing about your desire to be there anymore.

What's the old saying...a ton of knowledge but no wisdom. One afternoon in car with me and you shall have wisdom. Wisdom far beyond your beloved zip codes.

Quote from Pa(b)st Prime:

Other than driving through the panhandle on my way to Phoenix as a kid-I've never been in Texas.

As you know though I've spent quite a bit of time in L.A. And yea I like it there, a lot. BUT I wouldn't say native Californians are really any less "hickish" than Southerners or Midwesterners-after all most Californians are first or second generation middle-America. I love the O.C. or SD County or the South Bay (i.e. Torrence) but I'd hardly call those places sophisticated. And even in the Valley and the Westside it's not the same as 10 years ago. For every guy like you or me in Encino there's a Persian MD, a Russian flim-flam artist and a Chinese businessman. Nothing wrong with that but hardly the zenith of style. So yes a family man can better create the SoCal "experience" these days in Phoenix, Austin or Atlanta than he can in L.A. and at a fraction of the cost.

And as I'm sure you'd admit-L.A. isn't expensive because it's better than anywhere else-it's expensive in good areas because it's worse than anywhere else! L.A., Ventura and the O.C. are FILLED with inexpensive housing but the neighborhoods suck. Hence it costs a left lung in the nice areas because the cost of separation has pigeonholed everyone into about six zip-codes. For every 2.0mil tear down in Brentwood there's a perfectly nice 400k craftsman in Monrovia. But whereas a generation ago an Anglo would be right at home in the SGV these days it's all Asian.

Same deal in Montecito, eh? If half of SB wasn't barrio then one wouldn't need to pay up for Montecito.

people vote with their feet.
I for one have lived in
3+ yrs Ohio
3 yrs Nebraska
5 yrs Seattle
2 yrs in Austin TX
1 yr in Chicago
3 yrs in NYC metro including Manhattan
1 yr in Colorado
13(!!!!!) yrs in CA

Besides that I have visited EVERY state in the Union, including Florida, which is a cheap, red-neck version of CA with hurricanes and humidity.

and I only miss Seattle. The rest of the USA is a fucking DUMP(including NYC). yes I am from Budapest....

Having moving to CO from CA, 5 years now, I can't do Pacific NW. Too much freakin' gloom, clouds, and rain. I spent 2 months there as a kid during summer. The persistent drizzle in Seattle, no thanks. Portland is much worse off I hear.

I believe it was not too long ago, a certain ex president warned Californians against impeaching their former governor (Davis).
If you ask me... I believe things got a bit worse with the terminator.

Nevertheless .... I still love California. Nice people, the ocean, sun, and almost everthing I want in a place to be.

All we need, is to put some good decision makers in Sacramento

Mountains, clean lakes, lush forests, skiing, and still enough sun to not be gloomy - Colorado is one of the most beautiful areas not just in the U.S., but the world.

It's on my short list of places I'd consider living in.

So weird .... Right after my last post on California ... just over a minute later, I felt the biggest and long duration of earthquake I ever experienced.

They say it was a 5.0 with a 3.1 aftershock, but a lot of people are saying it felt much more powerful...

...stay safe.
