California College Chancellor Wants To Abolish Algebra Requirement,

"...The chancellor of California’s community college system said he wants to abolish the college algebra requirement and called it a “civil rights issue”...

"...algebraas [sic] overly burdensome due to the disproportionate rate at which it prevents students from graduating from community colleges; nearly 50 percent of community college students do not complete their math requirement..."

“If you think about all the underemployed or unemployed Americans in this country who cannot connect to a job in this economy — which is unforgiving of those students who don’t have a credential — the biggest barrier for them is this algebra requirement. It’s what has kept them from achieving a credential.”

A "credential" from a community college?

What good is a credential... if you don't know how to think, reason, or solve a problem?

what a pathetic article by forbes.
the example of why physics is so crucial in daily life is catching and throwing a ball due to trajectory. Yep, apparently if you understand and can calculate trajectories you will throw better. It's how all.quarterbacks really train i guess

Agreed.Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division is enough to deal most situations in the real world.College algebra should be required for majors that require its use or an elective course imo.

What Is Algebra and Its Role in the Real World?

"Whether you like it or not, Algebra is actually needed in your every day life. Number and equations are actually used in almost anywhere in the world. Take for example the time when you are out getting groceries. What would probably help you in computing and for staying budgeted is learning how to add and subtract items from your cart. But in this situation, there is still a cashier that could help you with this dilemma. How about in situations wherein you are on your own, like in a gas station? You will fill up your own gas tank, put it back by yourself and swipe your credit card onto the machine, then poof, it is done. The price of gas differs from one another each day, changes really fast day by day. The only thing that will help you with your problem on how many gallons you could take with your budget is learning Algebra."

Yeah, people really need college algebra to get gas and pay for groceries

You can't fix stupid, snowflake. You also think it is too difficult to get an ID to vote.

People need algebra because it's important to thinking spatially.

But because the article is being presented as left wing nuttiness (I'm surprised no one mentioned that the chancellor is Hispanic), no one has mentioned that he is suggesting statistics replace algebra as the core study.
