Buying nice clothes is smart-- says study

Spending on quality can be very smart on many levels. Loro Piana jackets for instance, never go out of style and will last for decades with proper csre-- im not a shoe guy, but same thing with timeless quality.
I'm a big believer in quality dress shoes. Not expensive necessarily - just comfortable and sturdy.
Cheap shoes will cause you problems.

There's definitely something to be said for dressing down or comfortably. Many true high end styles/brands don't look like much. My wife calls it the "wealthy homeless look". There's alot of this on Palm Beach , among the equesterian set, on Nantucket, and mainline of philadelphia. While miami and LA tend to be a little flashier.

The bigger the logo and flashier more colorful the clothes are often worn by and attractive to less wealthy people. While the truly wealty's clothes have very small logos and are not flashy at all but are extremely expensive.

Of course there are exceptions to every rule. If u are in the fashion biz for example

To say it bluntly, if you are not in or know the tribe, you will not recognize the look or items.

From clothes to watches -- they are all signaling devices to ones tribe or a statement of individuality.
"wealthy homeless look". “If someone isn’t what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.” ? Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

Watches have jumped the shark. Well & truly.

Slick advertising in glossy magazines is the attempt to keep the watch industry alive.
(Reminds me of Coca Cola advertising)
I haven't worn a watch for several years.

Mobile phones which everyone these days carry tell; Time, Date, Calculator, Maps, Compass, Internet, Emails, SMS, Camera, Photos, Contacts, Notes, Alarms, Alerts etc....

Why would someone be so daft as pay more for a watch than a good mobile?
It is a stupid fashion relic from a bygone era which is now on life support.

My immediate impression when I see someone wearing a fancy watch is thinking to myself "trying to impress but you've missed the bus"
(Usually bosses at work - those who still can't operate a computer)

I was just in a high end mall-- first time in quite awhile-- torneau- the #1 retail swiss luxury watch shop in USA, was packed with people. Despite the plunging sales, apparently there is still tremendous interest in outdated horology.

A fit body and good hygiene make Wal-Mart look good. Trust me.
Fitness and good care are orthogonal and complimentary to the quality clothing. Trust me :)

PS. However, if the choice is fitness vs fancy clothes, choose fitness.

There is still a tremendous interest in horses, despite total lack of practical purpose in owning one since the advent of the automobile. I do not own either, obviously.

Men's ties are another object I can see no sense in.
What purpose do they serve?
Maybe in winter it helps to retain heat by closing off the shirt is all I can think of.
In Perth many business people do not wear as it's too hot for a good part of the year.
But it's another fashion relic I would gladly like to see the end of, but doubt it.
Like suits and hats, here to stay, humans can be a pompous lot.
Royalty garb is another thing, sheesh - done up so much a peacock would feel ashamed. :)

Great point. But i was being a little snarky in my response---:cool: As a watch collector.

Only purpose i can see of a tie is so ones boss can use it to choke uncooperative workers--

I see a tie and my mind says-- slave.
