Buying a new Trading PC.... this is whats in my shopping cart and cyberpowerpc

Hello all...

I've been trading off my parents PC and my laptop for the past four years and am finally in the market for a PC. I am looking to buy one for when I head back up to college this fall as my laptop is unreliable and probably loaded with viruses.

I am looking for a setup that is fairly fast and can support two 22" monitors. I do not have an automated trading system and mostly swing trade off 60 min charts, with daily and 5 min charts for for help. However, I would like to have the ability to support any future trading methods I may develop.

My logic was that a gaming computer would suite me best for what I am looking for so I put together a system on cyberpowerpc, although this PC will be strictly for trading, writing papers, and completing online homework. (no porn or games ;)

Anyway, I don’t know much about computers and was hoping for some advise on what to order.... would like to know if anything is overkill or unsatisfactory.

Looks OK. One thing.. that GT220 video card probably comes with 1 DVI and 1 VGA port. You might want to run 2, DVI ports. For that, suggest Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 or 295. Used, from eBay is usually OK.

Or, "buy from Best Buy"?... Only if they have a better setup for less... likely they do not.

Excellent advice. Even brand new ones aren't trerribly overpriced. The downside is 3d performance is good to run "aero" in vista or windows 7 but is totally subpar for anything else. 2d performance, which is what you want for charts and trading applications, is great.

Another thing is... If you are planning to go with a 64bit operating system, get at least 6GB of RAM, or better 8. These days 4GB is fairly restrictive even for Web-browsing..

Does the price include the operating system? (Windows is what I assumed you want to run...)

Personally I like HP/Compaq boxes. I had a few of them before and they did not disappoint me.

Here is a box for $899 from HP online. HP Pavilion Elite HPE-350t series.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-860 quad-core processor [2.8GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache] (similar in performance to the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T

But:
1) Includes Windows 7 OS
2) 8 GB memory
3) 1TB hard disk

The drawback is probably not as many available expansion slots. (Only 1 PCIe). If you run only 1 video card that would be all right. Future expansion would be limited, however.

Just something to compare and shop.

I appreciate the input on the video card and adding additional ram. I believe the extra ram will increase speed?

I didn’t realize what was listed isn't everything I am paying for… Included in that price is windows 7 home premium 64 bit edition, ultra enhanced packaging for safe transit and professional wiring for a total of $142. This value is contained in the original given price. I can get a version of office from school for free.

Like I said however, I am not a computer guy and know I will not have very much information saved on this computer (no music, games, pictures, etc…). Will the extra memory and hard disk space be necessary for my application? I don’t know if there is any other advantage to either besides extra storage.. ?

Extra memory? Well, W7 likes "a lot of RAM"... As for the hard drive... 500G is a LOT of storage unless you start saving movies and music.
 
Unless you are planning on playing pc games with your system, there is no need for such a high end graphics card. If you want more than 2 monitors, get two cheaper graphics cards. Also, what power supply are you using? Do not get less than 550 watts. I'd recommend 650 watts. Most people underestimate the value of a good power supply.

Also, a 10000rpm hard drive would improve the speed of your computer SUBSTANTIALLY. I cannot emphasize this enough. Either get a 100000 rpm hard drive or a solid state drive if you can afford it (solid state will DRASTICALLY improve your application and data load times). A 10k rpm hard drive will do though if a ssd (solid state) is too expensive.

A computer that takes 30 seconds to boot up windows on a normal 7200 rpm drive will take around 15-20 seconds on a 10k rpm drive. That same computer can take as few as 4-6 seconds witih a solid state drive.

If you do go for a 10k hd, look into raptors. For a solid state, intel is good.
 
just get a SSD 64 gb and have the OS and trading platforms on it


and get a big 7200 rpm one for data and random stuff u download off the internet


that'll seriously improve your performance

when your computer doesnt have enough RAM to have all those programs running it uses the harddrive

i wouldnt get the AMD X6 i would just get the II X2 245

and the video cards fine if your not gonna play games
