Cracking the password to a wallet.dat file is much much easier than cracking a private key and there are services that can assist
I struggled with the idea that I would be stealing from someone else which is one of the reasons I didn't buy old laptops and hard drives from ebay to do this. There are even ways to filter for best chances, i.e. older laptop model, from places that wanted are likely to have early adopters, etc.
But, the reason I considered it is because there are people who died or got hurt severely that they were not able to pass those bitcoins to others. Those bitcoins are lost forever. When I spoke to my tax consultant, it's one of the topics that are discussed in their crypto conferences, lost wealth in digital assets
Yes and I believe you. Just wait for quantum computers to come out, supposidly they can crack a password rapidly. And this may sound stupid but a lot of people write down their seeds on files on the same computer as their wallet! All you would need is just a search for a group of random words and there you have it. The keys to an unknown amount of funds. Which there are viruses to find these kinds of things. I have fake documents on all my computers containing fake seeds just for that reason.
But if you really are a good enough hacker and know any crypto holders who died then yes that would be a very good strategy to get into. Like that idiot who has no access to his 244 million because he "doesn't know what he did with his password" LOL
