Communicating Off the Grid:
  1. Find yourself a used iPhone, possibly from Craigslist, where you have no relationship with the seller.
  2. Pay cash for it.
  3. Toss the SIM card and restore it to factory settings.
  4. Set up a burner email to get an anonymous iTunes account. (Do this from a library computer or one not associated with you.)
  5. Use cash to buy an iTunes gift card so you can download Signal (a private messaging service [basically a texting app] from the app store).
  6. Create a username consisting of random letters and numbers.
  7. Use a prepaid SIM bought with cash to get cell service.
  8. After that, don't use cell again. Only use it over public Wi-Fi.
  9. Also, download a VPN from Private Internet Access.
  10. Pay for it with a gift card you buy with cash.
  11. Keep Wi-Fi turned off when you are not actively using it.
  12. And the same thing goes for the phone.
This will make it difficult for anyone to locate you, even if they are specifically targeting you.

OR...
  1. Create a folder in a shared SpiderOak room.
  2. Come up with a username and a random number/letter/symbol set of twenty-six letters for entry.
  3. Use a VPN that you buy with a gift card purchased with cash from Wal-Mart or Starbucks or a similar establishment.
