ROME, Italy -- The flag-draped caskets of 18 Italians killed a bomb blast in Iraq have been carried from a plane in solemn silence as they arrived back in Rome.
The state funerals for those killed in Italy's worst military slaughter since World War Two will be held on Tuesday.
On Friday 20 others wounded in the attack -- in which nine Iraqis also died -- arrived back in Italy.
The caskets containing the 18 dead will lie in state Monday at the Vittoriano, a large white marble monument that dominates central Rome.
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government has declared Tuesday a day of national mourning.
Across the nation, schools will observe a minute of silence, shops will close briefly and workers will pause for 10 minutes.
The Colosseum, usually lit up at night, will remain dark Tuesday evening in a tribute to the dead, Rome officials decided.
President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi is cutting short a trip to the United States to attend the service, set for a Rome basilica.

Queen, Blair attend solemn memorial to British troops killed in Iraq war
LONDON (AP) - Prime Minister Tony Blair, widely criticized at home for taking Britain to war in Iraq, joined the Queen, religious leaders and others Friday at St. Paul's Cathedral for a solemn remembrance of those who died in the conflict.
The service was for the 50 British service personnel and one civilian killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led coalition invaded to depose Saddam Hussein. Blair and his wife, Cherie, attended the service but did not speak.

Flags across Spain were flown at half mast and a royal decree said the official day of mourning "bears witness to the pain of the nation in the face of the killings of seven Spaniards deployed in Iraq".
The seven men died on Saturday when their two vehicles were attacked with rocket-propelled grenades. Iraqis attacked their corpses.
Grieving family members gathered with the king and Queen Sofia at the sombre event, which honoured the victims of the worst single attack on Spaniards in Iraq.
