Extremist is relative to non extremist, or moderate.
It is easy to spot an extremist thinker...they are not moderate.
We have a two party system with radically different ideologies.
An extremist embraces all of one side, and denounces all of the polar opposite side.
The moderate looks at issue by issue, not by party ideology.

somehow i don't think people in afghanistan are sitting around on their la-z-boy watching cnn on a 50in flat screen waiting for a quran burning.
the fuel for their anger comes from occupation, economic alienation, distrust of official leaders....and so on. if they are provoked in any way, they will keep rioting. these people have not yawned for the past ~30 years since the soviet occupation.
also, if the quran burning becomes a yawn event, this would mean no publicity for the pastor. consequently, he may stop burning before the afghans stop rioting.
