Bruce Lee Fitness and Exercise Forum

I believe Bruce Lee would beat Ali in a fight if Ali had to wear boxing gloves and Lee were allowed to kick. In a street fight, I would still give Lee the edge if Ali had no ground game, but Lee did, as 95% of fights end up with opponents getting entangled with each other. A smaller guy with ground skills will beat a bigger guy without ground skills. Submissions, choke holds, riding one’s opponent until they get winded, and taking their opponent’s legs out from under them are advantages the martial artist has over a opponent who only knows boxing. Sure Ali has world class abilities with the weight and reach advantage. But time and time again we have seen pure boxers get beat decisively by smaller martial artists and ground guys on UFC.

I have experienced getting beaten by a shorter state champion wrestler several times that I outweighed by about 35%. I also knew basic wrestling moves. Although my opponent was stronger than me and could bench press twice his body weight, he made it a point not to use his superior strength against me and relied on technique instead. No need for me to feel too bad because on several occasions my opponent had crushed people twice his weight in bar fights.

I knew an American Muay Thai fighter at Gold’s Gym in Naples, FL. He demonstrated the “1 inch” punch and knife fighting techniques. It was astonishing how hard he could hit with his fist just by snapping his wrist. Actually, his 1” punch involved precisely timing the movement of his hips as well. Underestimate martial artists, including Jiu Jitsu and wrestlers at your own risk.

Not sure where to begin, but trying to take a state champion wrestler by just "knowing a few basic wrestling moves" is lol...

Lee's grappling game... Probably at a lower level than his boxing skills.

You misread my post or I was not clear that I did not know about the level of Lee’s grappling ability. Highlighted above is a line from my previous post and the words “if” and “but”.

I misread indeed, although I have no idea why one would ever think Bruce would come out as a mini Royce Gracie.

He's not joking?

Has not Bruce Lee been known to try different fighting styles? If he got beat by a grappler, I’m sure he would intently look into that style. That would be consistent with his personality.

“although I have no idea why one would ever think Bruce would come out as a mini Royce Gracie.”

You seem to have a polarized outlook on things and tend to apply hyperbolic interpretations or unsupported characterizations on them. Or is it simpler than that in that your main intellectual effort is jumping to conclusions and trying to put words in other people’s mouths or ideas?

Oops, I just did myself what I accused you of doing. Did my statement above annoy you? The reason why I wrote it is to highlight the idea that is it annoying when you do this in case you were not aware of it. Would you be an attorney, by chance?

Uh no, not annoyed, this thread had me watch a bunch of fights when oblivious to reality kung Fu practitioners stepped into a ring (cross martial arts challenges are a big thing in China at the moment)and it s time and again a disasterfor them. Still a bit confused why people would take movies featuring Bruce Lee moe seriously than those featuring TheRock. But sure he s been known to do a lot of things by his fans, probably mastering grappling and opening the Red Sea fit right in there.

Tarantino said:

If people are saying, ‘Well he never said he could beat up Muhammad Ali,’ well yeah, he did. Not only did he say that, but his wife, Linda Lee, said that in her first biography I ever read. She absolutely said that,” the director continued.

1. Lee never said it and Tarantino never quotes Lee. Bullshit #1

2. Linda never said that, here is the quote from her book:

Linda was quoting a TV critic. “Even the most scathing critics admitted that Bruce’s gungfu was sensational. One critic wrote: ‘Those who watched him would bet on Lee to render Cassius Clay senseless if they were put in a room and told that anything goes.” (pg. 88)

Bullshit #2.

I like to do a 1000 meters as a general warm-up before beginning my workouts. Not breaking any speed records, takes about 5 minutes but it gets the blood flowing and joints/muscles loosened up. I wonder what some sprints on it would do as a closer instead of battle ropes. Maybe I'll give it a try.
