Broadband Connection Speed for DayTrading

Guys, this isn't 1999. Literally any broadband is going to be absolutely fine. Killing off "unnecessary processes" will do nothing for latency as it's a physical limitation based on your proximity to the remote destination you communicate with.

I've literally traded off my phone in tethered mode and things were absolutely usable. Now consider how people use to cuss at their 14.4k and 56k (v.FAST, woohoo!) modems back in the day and you'll see how far we've come.

10ms less latency isn't going to help your trading.

I agree 960, it's not 1999 :eek: ... it's 2015 -- almost basically 2016 considering how many off holiday breaks there are in the coming months.

They might be wanting to do it for that reason, but I simply killed off the unnecessary processes for the actual speed. My regular connection went from 30ish to 60mbps. I never checked the difference in latency, if any.

The problem here is the nature of the speedtest is misleading you. It depends on browser CPU cycles to measure so if you have other processes competing for CPU then it can disrupt the test. Your actual underlying speed, connection-wise, is the same throughout. :-)

If you know how to trade you can still use dial-up or ISDN if they have it. That's why I posted that qualifying comment because having Hi-Speed won't make up for not knowing your stock or how it trades. One stock I bought over a payphone that stands out in the Early 1990s was Cheyenne Software when the Amex Exchange Specialist and Wall Street Mutual Funds were selling the heck out of her below what her cash value was!

I stepped up and bought my first lot of 5000 shares I got filled at $3.25 on a limit order of $3 7/16s, the next orders were filled and soon I had built up a giant position of CYE under $3.50! Between CYE and Optical Coating, those were changers for my investing accounts while leaving them alone, I used other funds to trade. Knowing your stock, how it trades and "what time is it?(Market wise) will help you more than Fast ISPs!

It took years for CYE and Barry to get CYE in order, I don't regret holding a block until she got bought out! Knowing your stocks is key, if you know them without having a freaky love fantasy(my friend lost over $750k to $2.50 million on Sagent Software because he thought he had Inside Information they were going to turn around while I was Short because I knew Sagent was dead!) The number changes because each time I talk with him his story diverges from the original $1 million. He claimed upper-management was giving him inside-scoop, he was the Buyer from $5 to $1.00, I covered at $.20! If he knew Sagent like I did, he would have shorted it instead of falling in love with a stock that was dead!

What ISP would you buy if you lived out of range of any ISPs, dsl or local Fiber? I am thinking of moving on a Cattle Ranch(My girl friend and me are buying a Cattle Ranch in Oregon, so if you have any ideas for me I would appreciate it. I don't want the same latency Satellite had, so what do we have access to? Will I have to go back to a t1 or Satellite?
 
I often trade from my phones hot spot. I use verizon wireless, it's incredibly fast. Sometimes a small delay (like a second) bringing up a high volume stock like apple in the level 2, but never a delay in trade execution or order entry. A full days trading usually eats up about 1 gig

1200 baud dial up - 4X faster than 300

J/K.., and showing my age



I use a wireless connection every day - no issues

Just make sure the provider has a cell tower in close proximity to your location

Marginal coverage is never good for reliability

If your anti-virus, browser and who knows what else start updating all once (it can happen), it most definitely will affect your latency as well. Anyone who shares their connection with family members knows this well. Latency can grow to twice the amount.
Leave a torrent client running in the background with hundreds of active torrents, then compare latency - you'll see the effect they have.
Mind you, in my particular example I was talking about a 1mbps connections (or anything less than 10mbps really).
