Apparently she thinks she should get special support from the government because (1) she plays basketball, and (2) she's black.

In a sense I feel sympathy for her... but she's gotta be stupid as a box of rocks thinking she could get away with crossing an international border with drugs in her possession and hoping not to get caught... and if caught, hoping to be able to talk her way out of it.

But keep in mind she is not the only American woman jailed in Russia. Seems like if you are an American woman who defends herself against domestic abuse in Russia these days -- they will lock up the victim and not the Russian abuser.

Of course if you are not a famous female basketball player then you are not important -- much less discussed.

Update(1130ET): WNBA star and American citizen Brittney Griner has been sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison colony after being convicted for "drug smuggling" related charges, after six months ago she was caught entering a Moscow airport with Cannabis vape cartridges, Interfax news is reporting.

Was her stash for personal consumption or what?
How much contraband was she carrying?
A gram, an ounce, a kilo, a basketball full, lol?
Like my one of my bud's pop told us in high school, the minute you get caught with drugs, you have no rights.

I heard an interview with the judge in this guys case in NPR. She was saying he got a mandatory minimum she did not agree with. She was concerned about how much weapons he flew into Iraq for the US, like 1,000 shipments and that he was then set up. It’s a complex case actually. Not so cut and dry.

That may be and I don't begrudge the guy a fair trial or appeal or anyone else for that matter.

Nevertheless, the government thinks/thought he was a high value arrest and prosecution so they are offering up a high value detainee for Miss Cannabis Oil.

These dumbphuks like the stupid shit who went to North Korea and stole some artwork or posters off the wall and then the North Koreans beat him to death- wombee, wannabee, wombat, something like that. They present a mixed scenario. On one hand the government needs to protect them as best we can. On the other hand, Jesus H. what were you doing? Frigging American hikers crossing the Iranian border etc. Give the country a break and don't put us through that. How badly did you need to hike on the Iranian border? Go to Mount Denali in Alaska for chrissake.

I agree with all of this. Griner has to stand on her own two. Totally dumb. If you love weed don’t play ball in Russia. Duh.

However, if there is deal, anything less than a package for her and the other guy being held would be a loss. Her on her own is not enough.
