"The 21st century may well be the Canadian century," Cameron said in his address to Parliament during his first solo visit this country.

He called for decisive action by political leaders in the run up to the G20 meeting in France this November and for countries to come to grips with their sovereign debt.

"Endlessly putting off what needs to be done doesn't help - in fact, it makes the problem worse," he said.

His message echoed that of an open letter sent to the head of the G20, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, on Thursday and signed by six world leaders including Cameron and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Underscoring the long relationship between the U.K. and Canada, Cameron and Harper also signed a joint declaration – the first in 14 years between the two countries – that will deepen trade and security ties between the two countries.
