Couldn't the Brits just instruct their double-o-seven to seduce some Iranian chick who is hopefully in charge of the facility where the sailors are kept? James could then rent a Lamborghini in downtown Tehran, drive through the open gate, get the prisoners, and give 'em some Sheppard pie, 'cause they are fed up with those macaroni and cheese.

On a serious note, this whole 'incident' smacks of some very odd notes.

How the hell does a boarding party from a UK warship get overtaken without it being known back at HQ, and why wouldn't they do something about it?

Fog of War....lots of shipping and other small boats in the gulf. It's not that big, and lots of activity in that small area. If the small boat didn't radio in about the situation, they wouldn't be missed for a bit.

Every commander has a set of orders know as Rules of Engagement...ROE. This specifically guides the actions a commander can and can't take under circumstances, violation of these ROE is a serious offense and will end the careers of most officers, thus, they follow them pretty closely.

This thing went down fairly quick, and the commander would not, could not, follow them into Iranian waters. At that point, what options does he have? What's he going to do, fire on his own soldiers? His only option is to send it up the chain of command and await orders.
 
As I noted before from other sources, Iran wants prices up while Saudis want it lower. Iran tried the nuclear angle and it worked for a while, but crude started dropping. Now the sailors issue has brought them back up. Many in the oil industry must be quite happy with status quo, may even wish for more sabre-rattling. Iran is almost going broke importing refined products from India at huge cost, lacking maintenance for aviation, military etc.

On the other hand, an attack by Britain or US can be ruled out completely with the "stretch" in Iraq and lessons learned already. they are going to try diplomacy to the end this time...
