I don't care what part of the political spectrum you're on. But if it weren't for America, the world would be a very different place right now. The world would be dominated by either: nazis, imperial Japan, or most likely the Soviet Union. Think about how horrible life was under communism. Some people on this board KNOW what life is like under communism. They KNOW the absolute terror. Communism was the greatest evil the world has ever seen.
America has many faults (believe me, I harp on them), but I'll take a world dominated by it than by one dominated by the Soviet Union any day of the week. Sadly, America is in big trouble right now, and is definitely on a steady decline. Like Rome, it is collapsing under the weight of its own decadence.

The first defeat of Japanese land forces in the Pacific war was inflicted at the battle of Milne Bay in New Guinea by the Australian Army and Air Force. It destroyed the myth of Japanese invincibility and was a huge boost to morale of all Allied forces in the Pacific.

So, I would suggest that you should be a little more gracious and acknowledge the suffering endured by others in that terrible war.

your estimate of the military ability of the US is way overblown. events have shown the US cannot deal with Iran or north korea. they have spend years trying to pacify iraq. they are ignored by all sides in the middle east.
no one can state for sure what will happen in a worldwide depression. to state that the US will suffer the least and recovers the quickest does not have a basis in reality. . the US is debt ridden teetering on financial bankruptcy its standard of living is financed by otherr countries continuing to buy its debt. its educational system below the graduate level is inferior to many other countries. . it is energy dependent on other countries. . the conclusion is countries. like japan, canada brazil, russia china and india will recover much quicker from a financial disaster.
Gotta disagree Dave. Comparisons of the decline of the Roman Empire really aren't relevant to what the U.S. is experiencing. Rome faced military destruction. The U.S. will never face military destruction. Its crass to say but, yes, the U.S. has a massive stockpile of thermonuclear weapons and the will to use them.
The whole thing about the U.S. is purely economic. Yeah, I agree that the U.S. is about to get a hard lesson in basic economics and that many U.S. citizens are going to realize a lessor lifestyle than they have enjoyed. That doesn't mean the "decline of the U.S.", it just means some of us will have to sell the Bentley and put the kids in public school. Hardly the end of the world.

It's not the most glorious way to salvage one's wealth or reputation, and America prides itself on the projection that it has the capacity to constantly 'reinvent itself,' but when all else fails, it will do in a pinch.
I am very concerned that the death grip of deflation has so deeply entrenched itself in the global economy, that it may be too late to ward off its destructive, downward spiral, however.
