The problem is that we all do not have social skills when it comes to the Internet, mostly because it is so new we do not really know what the norm for social interaction is. The next generation mothers will grace us with these "manners."
Add to that the anonymous handle stuff, add to that a chit-chat forum where every other thread pops up a "conversation" about religion, politics, sex, race, you name it, all the "taboo" subjects, and now you have just the right mix for DEFCON 2. Add a few trolls and a couple of people that love to continue to initiate threads in the chit-chat that focus on that which seperates us as a nation/world, and well, you have DEFCON 1.
The "solution" is easy, but it will never fly.
IMO, the chit-chat forum should be moved to another site, where we keep the same handles as we do here so that we all know each other there. Then, if you start a thread in the normal ET forums that relates to one of the taboo topics, you are warned of the other forum made for chit-chat subjects and are banned on a three strikes you are out type of system.
The invention of chit-chat forum was a "solution" that cured the symptoms of this site and not the disease.
However, my guess is that if you counted the number of hits this site generates now, I would guess that a HUGE portion percentage wise comes from the chit chat forum.
Ironic...
I know that I have gotten involved with some complete imbiciles on this site. Each time I have regreted it, and I try to always ask myself if this is the kind of behavior I would employ with these people face to face. If the answer is no, I at least admit it to myself and try next time to "grow up" on the Internet.
My guess is that banning Maverick was the correct thing to do. I do not dislike him, but my guess is that he will come back to ET under a new handle a better "Internet" man because of it.
Another thing that people don't realize is that the odds of finding 10 or even 20 people out of 20,000 that you cannot stand are actually pretty high - it does not make them or you "bad," just the chemistry is wrong. Just recall the last party you went to where there were 200 or 300 people...
