Brits are voting in a general election for the third time in five years today,not counting the multiple waves and iterations of brexit attempts.
Git er done for gawd's sake and get on with taking care of "bidness"- as they say in Texas.

I guess the Brits are officially out of the EU at the end of January, but still working on separation terms after that.

Seriously, who cares? The UK ceased to be a functioning country years ago. More like a gang-infested theme park with nuclear weapons, which they probably couldn't operate if the need arose.

The year is to be used to negotiate a new trade deal between the Brits and the EU for all future years. It is generally believed to be too short of a time period to negotiate an all-compassing trade deal in 11 months. Which would mean that as of January 1st 2021 all trade between the Brits and EU would be under WTO rules.
Okay, well, when I referred to "separation terms" I was referring to the trade agreement. As in, what will the terms of trade be after the separation.
And you have stated that the period is for negotiating what the "new trade deal between the Brits and the EU" will be for future years. Okay fine, but I ask again then, how is that different from the last three years of doing that, other than the Brits saying, "we are really going to do it now so we have to get serious about it?"
EU didn't want to negotiate a new trade deal as long as Brexit was not definitive. So there have been no discussions on a trade deal yet.
Brits are getting nowhere with negotiating a trade deal with the EU before the end of the year so it looks like a rough landing and a hard exit.
To make matters worse the Europeans/EU and others are expecting a Joe Biden win- which may or may not happen, I don't know. Not only does that mess up the negotiations because they know that Biden sides with the Macron/Merkel pussies but it also means that the U.S. will not be in a position to help the Brits by giving them favorable trade deals and influencing other countries to do that too if they want to do business with the U.S. And Biden likes to stick anything related to Ireland issues up the arse of the Brits anytime he gets a chance. Further, not to forget, that it was the Obama-Biden administration that said that "the UK would go to the back of the queue in any trade talks with U.S if they exited." Which they did.
And if Biden is elected, the Aussies are out there alone in fighting the Chinese colonization of Australia and other countries because Biden is owned by the Chinese.
We are fucked,and the free world is fucked if Biden is elected. Or as the dems would put it "The Free World Sucks - Elect Biden."
Gonna be some happy campers around the world if Biden is elected: Iran, North Korea, China, so on and so forth. In addition to all the domestic trash that wants to cancel the country.
