I don't have any connections and I made a pretty good life for myself through hard work, sacrifice and taking a lot of risks. That's the american way. Stop holding your hand out for hand me downs. Most of the people who I know who are poor, don't really mind being poor. They get use to it. They just don't have the desire to step up in life and thats fine. Nothing wrong with that.
They also don't have to worry about working 80 hours a week, they don't have to work in a high stress environment, they don't have people relying on them, they don't have to make any deadlines, take any risks, or make any life long sacrifices, to them, they see their life as a good deal. Sometimes I envy them, I wish my life could be that simple.
