I'm on day 8 waiting for the results of my nasal swab test results being processed by LabCorp which is I think doing a significant percentage of our testing in the U.S.More false positives via a petri dish and it takes longer to culture from a petri dish...resulting in longer waiting times for results. If someone was severely ill...they could die while waiting for the results. Also, petri dish are a little more problematic in mass transportation to a lab for testing.
Covid-19 is not unique in the testing. Many other airborne diseases from respiratory require that long invasive nasopharyngeal swab. Another issue, you'll be surprise with how many elderly or normal people don't have the lung capacity to even just give a single cough that strong enough (viral load) for proper sampling in a petri dish. Further, its a big issue for small children infected with Covid-19.
Also, you don't want someone to cough into a petri dish especially if they're infected with something that's airborne / contagious and then the next person to be tested is now standing in the same area that the prior person had recently just coughed.
Simply, you have more control with a nasopharyngeal swab without making it airborne. More protection for others around you that are not infected.
Swabs has been traditionally the preference of use in outpatient or in the field setting...more efficient, faster and safer.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying (and btw troll boy @Turveyd doesn't actually listen to the answers to any of the "questions" he asks that he thinks are such gotchas because that's not the troll way). But I think it's an underreported fact that testing is so far behind at the moment. My doctor told me that I'd either have a full blown case or be asymptomatic and over it within 10 days. It took 7 days for the person who I was exposed to to get their positive results back so we're at 17 days now from my first exposure. Which all points to the idea that testing at this point is useful only for large scale epidemiology tracking purposes, it can't provide any benefits to individuals with those timelines. Even to the point that it's nearly worthless for informing someone who really cares to self quarantine. And even for large scale tracking purposes, all the data we're seeing today is at least a week old, something that no one appears to be talking about.
