Brain Function and Aging: Keep Your Brain Going Strong

For those who do lean toward the blood circulation/brain approaches, it should be noted that vinpocetine (readily available supplement, prescription in some places in Europe I think) has demonstrated increased increased brain blood circulation in many studies. Not talking about health supplement newsletter crap. I mean within the body of pubmed level research. Probably some research questioning it too, as with anything, including kale. Just saying, vinpocetine is there for consideration.

As an aside, vinpocetine is actually just an extract from the common periwinkle plant- (vinca major and vinca minor) that you see around and about where it has been planted for a ground cover. It's pretty hardy too. Can stand the severe cold and spreads slowly from one decade to the next, more rapidly where the winters are mild.

Correlation between cerebral circulation and intellectual impairment in patients with “aging brain,” and the effect of vinpocetine on cerebral circulation

Interesting, but:

Vinpocetine is banned from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada due to potential harmful nootropic characteristics as a cognitive enhancing supplement [13]. Although the health benefits of vinpocetine have been proven in scientific studies, more research is needed to define the dosage parameters with respect to benefits and risks of both short- and long-term usage of vinpocetine as a dietary or pharmaceutical supplement [4]. Of primary concern are the negative consequences of long-term usage of vinpocetine and the potential for addiction to this and other nootropic drugs [46].

There are currently not enough scientific or clinical studies to support or denounce the claims of vinpocetine as a cognitive enhancer.
