Bought a fancy new Dell and it sucks

Gotta be careful if you are looking at SFF desktops and/or laptops. I'm pretty sure most of them have the low wattage CPUs and will throttle the processing power to maintain that wattage, IIRC.

16 slots of RAM and a Xeon processor screams power workstation or a server, I'd take that all day over a low-wattage 12th or 13th gen Intel Core i9. The desktop versions (full wattage) are heat generators, they basically require at least an AIO for cpu cooling. I don't see much of a reason to get an i9 these days, but if you have the proper cooling, why not I suppose. You could under-volt them in the BIOS settings with a motherboard capable of doing that to help with cpu temps.

My pc is a custom Dell precision (at home -- at work I built it myself) Precision 3460 Small Form Factor | Dell USA

I'd recommend @newwurldmn get something along those lines...the current PC he has is not really designed for professional use. It looks more like a server lol.

it’s actually not a server. It’s like sle’s but baby size.

Dell has their own driver update software. It seems pretty good.

The pc has been running great since I upped the power consumption.

I wonder if my local power company will pay me to shut it off.

Scat recommended xeons a few years ago and I am inclined to agree with him. My last Xeon is eight years old and can still run my trading infrastructure easily.

Scat recommended xeons a few years ago and I am inclined to agree with him. My last Xeon is eight years old and can still run my trading infrastructure easily.

Is your trading infrastructure so heavy that you need this level of machines?

Is it like Bloomberg terminal plus a few custom software that harvest calculate and analyse data?

I am impressed by the size of these machines discussed here, and as I only run Tws, Tos and a few browser tabs, I am curious about what trading tools use that amount of ram and power.

I`m still a happy user of a DELL Precision M4800 laptop (i7-4800mq 16gb ram). But now looking for a replacement. What would be the most recommendable refurbished machine, kind of "best kept secret of the industry"?

Not at all. I could run it on a much less powerful machine.

I chose it for:
1. I fully expect this to last me 10+ years and hopefully be my last machine before I put up my spurs and live a life of leisure and decadence.
2. I don’t want to risk components failing on me over that time period.

idk, just picked up an ASUS Q series, i9, 16gb, 1 tb on labor day sale ~1k. This little puppy is so quiet compared to my old Lenovo Yoga i7, and noticeably quicker. The build quality also "feels" "tighter" and more "crisp."

I'm now an avid fan of ASUS after being a thinkpad & mbp user for decades.

I dunno about "best kept secret", but I endorse looking for another Precision laptop. I've got a Precision 7520.

(Of course I didn't pay new price... bought it off lease for $350. Has 16GB RAM, 5GB VRAM, NVME drive, UHD display and 3-yr warranty... just like a new machine.)
