Bought a fancy new Dell and it sucks

Computer doesn't come with a wifi card so thats a non issue. So far my thinking is that it was the power setting. I'm going to check the bios this evening to see if they've underclocked the ram.
Hmmm. Interesting. I'd still try that though. It only takes a second.

You would think Windows would realize that, but with Windows, after you take updates, you just never know.

i looked into it. i read the help from microsoft. i didn't feel comfortable switching the value.

those are things that you forget to undo later if there's a problem.

btw - i learned something else new today: GPEDIT allows you to customize all sorts of things in windows that aren't obvious. Like getting rid of the stupid news articles in the start menu.

No I totally understand that, I was even going to tell you it's harmless.

I bought the basic system (w5-3423 2.1 to 4.2ghz 12 cores, 24 threads)
I downgraded the memory to 32gbx1 dimm instead of the standard 16x2.

otherwise the standard system.

I'm trying to refresh the drivers now. it's hanging.

I think going with one 32gb x1 DIMM of RAM vs having 2x16gb can show a decrease in performance as you're not using dual-channel memory. I doubt it's causing what you're describing, but benchmarks show dual-channel has significant increases in multi-core performance last time I looked into it.

I'd bet on the Windows settings being the issue. I'd look at the memory settings in the BIOS to make sure it's running full clock speed as others suggested. Coming from DELL, it should be set up correctly though.

thanks. I think i will get a second 32gb dimm so i will have dual channel memory. Maybe that's why the 1 dimm was cheaper than the 2. It was weird and I thought i spotted a relative value trade :).

Since the window settings, i've had no problems at all.

Nice, if you do that make sure it's an identical memory stick and that you put it in the right slot. On a motherboard with four DIMM slots (A1, A2, B1, B2), dual-channel would require the two sticks to be in DIMM_A2 and DIMM_B2 for example. It should be in the manual though.

thanks. I was trying to figure that out. I either have 8 slots or 16 and right now have only 1 slot filled. (That’s what she said)
