Border Patrol arrests drop sharply in June

My note: Official government commentary in the past indicates that we only capture 1% or less of the people illegally crossing the Mexican border. Capturing 34,057 in one month means that another 306,513 crossed the border without being arrested in June.

Border Patrol arrests fell sharply in June to the lowest level since February, according to a U.S. official, ending a streak of four straight monthly increases.

The drop may reflect seasonal trends or it could signal that President Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance" policy to criminally prosecute every adult who enters the country illegally is having a deterrent effect.

The agency made 34,057 arrests on the border with Mexico during June, down 16 percent from 40,344 in May, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the numbers are not yet intended for public release. The June tally is preliminary and subject to change.

Arrests were still more than double from 16,077 in June 2017, but the sharp decline from spring could undercut the Trump administration's narrative of a border in crisis.

Customs and Border Protection, which includes the Border Patrol, declined to comment on the numbers, saying it doesn't discuss them as a matter of policy until public release "to ensure consistency and accuracy."

The administration announced in early May that it was prosecuting every illegal entry, including adults who came with their children. The separation of more than 2,000 children from their parent sparked an international outcry and Trump reversed course on June 20, ordering that families should stay together.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told agents to temporarily stop referring illegal entry arrests to the Justice Department for prosecution if they involve parents unless they had a criminal history or the child's welfare was in question. His edict came "within hours" of Trump's directive to avoid splitting families.

McAleenan told reporters last week that border arrests were trending lower in June but said he wouldn't provide numbers until their public release in early July.

"I believe the focus on border enforcement has had an impact on the crossings," McAleenan said.

Rising temperatures could also be a major influence, discouraging people from walking in the scorching and potentially lethal heat in much of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Arrests fell from May to June in four of the previous five years, last year being the exception.

Still, the month-to-month percentage decline is notable. It fell in the low single digits in 2014 amid a major surge in illegal crossings and in 2015. Declines approached 20 percent in 2016 and 2013.

Border arrests - an imperfect gauge of illegal crossings - surged during much of last year after falling dramatically in the early months of the Trump administration.

The numbers do not reflect activity at official crossings. The Border Patrol polices between ports of entry, not at them.

Yeah, moral bankruptcy using threats against kids works. Hitting your kids makes them shut up. Drugging them with 'vitamins' works better. Stealing is a good way to get things you want... If you steal but blame another for the theft, you can steal more! All these great things people are learning now.

Or (and) it is too hot and the World Cup. Lots of temporary employment as people get ready to party.

And congrats, a left wing victory in Mexico as a reaction to Trump?

Actually a left wing victory in Mexico is a reaction to the rampant corruption in Mexico -- turning away from traditional parties such as PRI to put a populist in power. Does this sound familiar?

When one suffers from perpetual TDS, everything seems related Trump. Volcanoes, poor gas mileage, hemmaroids.....

Official government commentary
Was the officials last name "Trump". :D According to experts on immigration policy the previous procedure involved screening and processing border crossers asking for asylum relatively quickly, putting an ankle bracelet on them, and setting a future court date. Highly accurate data shows that 90% showed up in court, and 10% did not. I did not see any data re the 10%. One can assume it is a mix of those hiding out in the U.S., perhaps with relatives, those that returned to whence they came, and those later apprehended. Obviously the money, manpower, and human cost of the previous policy would be a small fraction of the costs to enforce Trumps "zero tolerance" policy. Whether the additional legal and moral questions and cost attendant the current policy is justified by the final result seems highly questionable to me. My observation is that the present policy has been decided based on politics and ideology rather than legal, moral and practical considerations. We could use better decision making in the White House!

Should be interesting. Let's wait and see if the new government's solution to their problems is to pour gasoline on the entire country and strike a match, or to address their problems with practical solutions. They can always look to their Northern Neighbor for an example of what NOT to do.

Yeh, because the mexicans would never want to see their country turn into something that looked like the U.S.
Not if they are capable of learning by example they won't. There are far better models for them to emulate. And if they are going to work on their problems (all countries have them) why not pick a country with far less poverty and crime, excellent public schools, universal access to medical care, opportunity for all, and a high overall living standard as a model to work toward. Naturally, that model would NOT be the U.S.A.

Mexico has been free for a long time to pursue what is right for them.

You and your ilk follow the same strategy toward Mexico as you do on the home front- ie. you are good at teaching others how to hate the U.S but not so good at actually helping to bring about any real change. Oh, that's right. Just getting people to hate the U.S is your goal.

Just chatting with my Colombian girlfriend and she says he was running on the simple man, lived in ordinary apartment, public transport user akin to President Pepe of Uruguay.

She recons he is probably ok however Mexico is dangerous place because of it's northen neighbour's appetites for vice. One can't expect a big change but not getting worse is better than nothing.
