That is good news......for Trump
Hmmm. I don't think I would have done what you suggest were I Comey. If I were, I would have continued the investigation quietly knowing my notes re my meeting with the President had no expiration date attached, and that these notes were now ancillary to the investigation I was carrying out. Trump's firing of Comey presented Comey with new options, options he wouldn't have had as the FBI director.

oddly the the cnn sources were wrong regarding the fact that comey did tell trump he was not under investigation.

There is not going to be one Trump voter that will be surprised to hear comey say those things about Trump.
But many of us were surprised Comey confirmed he thrice told trump he was not under investigation.
