This is no shock and awe. US, Pakistan and Afghanistan were ready to negotiate with the Taliban until the fatal suicide bombing in the Lower Dir, Pakistan in early February.

The latest offensive does not only involve US troops, but also Nato and Afghan forces, the latter making up more than half of the total forces.
