This article is about House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's efforts to restablish the Voting Rights Act. The Supreme Court ruled a significant part of this law unconstitutional, which sent liberals into hysterics. The part they desperately want back is the so-called preclearance section, which mandated that a list of southern states submit any changes in their voting laws to the Justice Department for approval priot to putting them into effect.
Now astoundingly, Eric Cantor is apparently beavering away to get it passed again in more limited form. Why? Who knows. It is very unpopular with rank and file members, but you have to think Boehner is on board if Cantor is pushing it. RINOs like it, because it doesn't involve their own states and they can point ot it as evidenc eof their deep commitment to civil rights.
The Justice Department under Eric Holder was using the law to try to block voter ID laws. Basically, reenacting the law would give the democrats a sledge hammer to use against republican efforts to fight vote fraud, plus hamper redistricting efforts. The fact that the law is an affront to the Constitution might also be a consideration.
How int he world did a supposedly conservative party end up with leaders like Boehner, Cantor and Paul Ryan?
