Bloomberg Calls for Action on Jobs, he doesnt get it either!!!!!

Quote from Vinny1:

Some New Yorkers refuse to leave New York, no matter how bad things get. They would rather be broke, unemployed, and living with their parents, than move to another state where they could have a great quality of life, a job, a great home at a quarter of the price that they would pay in NYC, Long Island, or Westchester county, and low property taxes.

I see simple 3 bedroom split level 1953 homes in Westchester county selling for $800k with $18k per year in property taxes. How in the world would most young families starting out be able to afford that? In Georgia, you can get the same home for $150k with $1,500 per year in property taxes.

I moved out of NJ 6 years ago and would never go back to the NJ/NY area to live. The winter weather stinks and home prices and property taxes are ridiculous, plus everything looks old and decaying.

So true. We still live here. But far east on the Island where infrastructre is minimal and schools arent big so the tax burden isnt so bad. But if that changed we would flee for sure.

Quote from Scataphagos:

All the more reason to let NYC go bankrupt... so that such "contracts" can be renegotiated... same with California and all public employee unions.

Contracts, unions, etc may be viewed as infrastructure.

And if we consider these things infrastructure then they are too big too fail and not be dismantled.

It's either "dismantle" or bankrupt the private sector. Which would you choose?

The city would have been sleeping and prices would have been at least somewhat more affordable if were not for Bubble ben bernanke and his printing of worthless monopoly dollars!!!!!!

It never sleeps because there are tons of tourists there, plus you have the bridge and tunnel crowd partying in NYC's many bars and clubs with the girls trying to bag their rich trader from the city before someone else does. It must be somewhat quieter with all of the financial sector layoffs.

I visit family in NJ several times a year and I still love visiting Manhattan, but home prices within a 30 mile radius of Manhattan are ridiculously high, as are the taxes. I rather save my money to be able to spend 2 or 3 months travelling in Europe in the summer and for retirement than wasting it away on a mortgage and especially property taxes.
