AS for San Fran:
San Francisco Mayor London Breed on Thursday announced a plan for how the city will spend $120 million over the next two years, pulled from law enforcement budgets, to reinvest in the city's long-underserved Black communities.
"The Dream Keeper Initiative," as it's dubbed, increases investments in workforce development, health campaigns, youth and cultural programs and housing support.
This kind of spending to help communities could reduce the incidence of crime and support local communities. WIthout looking at what the $120 million is being cut from you cannot really comment. Some police budgets include community outreach and community programs which are better served by other agencies than the police who already have their hands full. I tried to find info on the budget but only found the budet is about $660 million overall. But without more info we cannot see where cuts could be made for positive redirection.
Also the Mayor is cutting ALL services across the board by 7.5% due to economic issues since COVID. So no part of city services is immune from budget cuts. You are relying on a BROOKINGS definition of what something means but you should really dive into the numbers.
Do you know how many police budgets have been so inflated. If you go back and look at budget cuts in the past, schools and municipal hospitals always get the first swipe and police unions do a better job of protecting their budgets while the city pays out hundreds of millions in lawsuit money. Chicago, for instance, spent $55 million in 2017 and $113 million in 2018.
Budgets reveal a society’s priorities. Two photographs circulated on social media last year, driving the point home. One showed cops decked out in expensive military gear. The other showed health care workers wearing garbage bags because of the shortage of basic protective gear during the pandemic.
It is not an easy issue and no one really wants to defund the police but it is fair to look at their budgets as they have scaped cuts for many years and cause the city to spend millions on their fuck ups from the few bad ones. Every other profession would undergo an overhaul to stop such liability but the pensioned cops fight to keep the status quo.
