Black Monday: Nuclear Meltdown in Japan

Quote from GTS:

Reactors that were not operating before the quake cannot be in a state of "out of control meltdown" - there were only three reactors operating. Reactor 4 has an issue with its spent fuel which has nothing to do with the reactor itself.

Oh really, so now you are trying to say that reactors at another facility are in a state of meltdown too? Don't be so coy... out with all your nonsense then.

Kanzei is Japanese, he understands the Japanese mentality and knows the various cultural intricacies and subtleties when the officials make their statements.

Are you Japanese? Are you as well versed in the nuances of japanese culture as he is?

Please address the facts as we know them and not the messenger. Nuances are not relevant here.

Are you disputing the fact that only three reactors were operating at the time of the quake?

Are you disputing the fact that a reactor that was not operating cannot going into a state of meltdown?

I don't care if Kanzei lives 1 mile from Fukushima- saying "there are 6 reactors without power. at least 4 are in one stage of meltdown or another. by the end of the day, all 6 might be." is at best just factually incorrect, at worst it is attempting to over-sensationalize what is clearly a bad situation.

France has advised its nationals to leave Tokyo because of threats posed by the nuclear power plants 160 miles north of the Japanese capital.

Grandluxe, I believe i have neccesary 'credentials' to understand the ' various cultural intricacies and subtleties ' Ive been here bloody long enough. and its definately in my best interests to try and figure out as best I can what the hell is going on. Yes we are looking at a major disaster. But as has been correctly stated, there have also been attempts to oversensationalize said maor disaster. HAve a read of the report I linked to earlier and see if it makes sense to you. Everyone is entitled to form their own opinion from the facts, but noone is entitled to making up the facts.
This link also puts in perspective the levels of radiation we are experiencing.

I do believe that they may be understating the levels of radiation in the immediate area and I am prepared to get out of here if things get to a level I consider dangerous. But for now, my opinion is any serious radiation exposure is going to be localized.

Now you admit there's a problem?

Actually Grandluxe, I seem to recall you saying on Friday that the 2004 Asian disaster was "1000 times worse"....

Just woke up to a third explosion, a reactor breach reported by LA times, Tokyo radiation levels 23 times above normal, and mSv levels at the plant ~600 hr. This is nothing to gloat about, but the data points indicated a clear trend was in place, early on. Those nuke plants weren't built to sustain a 9.0 magnitude quake...

That said, the Nikkei is a screaming buy if a nuke disaster gets averted. Short yen, too. Could be another 5-8% to the downside if it goes into full-scale meltdown. Maybe another 5-10% after that, if radioactive fallout blankets Japanese cities. First, wait to see if the partial meltdown can be arrested. Any full-scale meltdown will see heavy market intervention by the BOJ to prop.

I trust the IAEA way more than that awesome company TEP, and according to the IAEA levels outside the plant are dropping.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said a radiation dose level of 11.9 millisieverts (mSv) per hour was observed at the main gate of the Fukushima nuclear power plant at 0000 GMT on Tuesday. (Reuters) "
