Black Every Day?

I think the odds of this are close to zero. But I have been very wrong before. Imo, the FED raises twice, a fearful maybe three times this year.

Negative rates in US? Here's why it could happen

"Less than two months after the Fed enacted its first rate hike in more than nine years, market talk already has turned to whether the central bank's future may not be more hikes, but rather negative rates.

Intensifying recession fears, volatile financial markets and moves toward negative rates by other central banks have triggered speculation over whether the Fed may have to reverse course on its tightening policy.

Negative rates in the U.S. would be a highly unusual move. However, several high-ranking Fed officials, including Chair Janet Yellen, Vice Chair Stanley Fischer and New York Fed President Bill Dudley all have indicated the move would be something they would have to examine should financial conditions tighten and threats to economic growth increase...."

The oil supply is so intense, there is no place to store it

America is pumping so much oil that it's running out of places to keep it all.

"The U.S. now has nearly 503 million barrels of commercial crude oil stockpiled, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. It's the highest level of supply for this time of the year in at least 80 years. ..."

This is crazy, and Obama wants to add a tax on oil now. I think is a good idea in the long run, but that means another few dollars down in oil right now!

Short XLE?

On the other hand, think from a contrarian point of view: What on Earth more can happen to oil that will make it go lower? The only thing left is Recession.

So, there are probably five trading reasons to go long, and one HUGE economic reason to go short.

Pick your poison. [FWIW, the model is short here, but that is meaningless on the scale of economic decisions]

Can't we send solar cells to space, get closer to the sun to make inverse square law work, no night and day in space, and beam the energy back? Why would we need oil in the future?

In the future sure.

North Korea launches long-range rocket

"Seoul, South Korea (CNN)[Breaking news update, posed at 7:48 p.m. ET]

North Korea has launched a long-range "missile," a South Korean defense ministry official told CNN Sunday.

[Previous story, posted at 5:09 p.m. ET]

North Korea has moved up the launch window for a rocket by one day, the South Korean Defense Ministry said Saturday.

The new window, which was also narrowed, is February 7-14; the old window was February 8-25. The areas where debris would fall remain unchanged.

The announcement comes just days after the reclusive country's initial launch plans came to light, which drew condemnation from South Korea and Japan. And it means blastoff could come as early as 7 a.m. Sunday in North Korea (5:30 p.m. ET Saturday).

Though North Korea says it's putting a satellite into orbit, the launch is viewed by others as a front for a ballistic missile test.

U.S. officials have said the same type of rocket used to launch the satellite could deliver a nuclear warhead.

"Forcing the launch is a clear violation against the [United Nations Security Council] resolution and a serious provocation against the security to our country," Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday.

Officials for the International Maritime Organization and the International Telecommunications Union each told CNN that North Korea informed their respective organizations that it intends to launch a satellite...."

No need to go into space. Enough sunlight hits the earth

Getting the US off foreign oil would be a massive boost for it's economy. The US sends trillions of dollars to the Saudis to buy their oil. Imagine if they spent that money inside their borders.
Obama is a genius for imposing this tax. It will break foreign dependance off oil in a generation

The fear is that the energy situation is about to become a financial situation with defaults spilling over. CDS are looking grim, especially for some European banks.

Is DB Europe's Lehman?

SPX feels like it settles ~1820 today.
