The guy who owned the 70K mentioned somewhere else that he earned 1 million net from intellectual property rights. If true, he might not be hurt for the money so badly, although I don't see why he would be peddling coins for pennies....Maybe just a hobby or the claim wasn't true...

No story, just shiny coins from someone's collection, they are about 10 coins' worth:
(these are the so called casascius coins made by a Utah firm and carry a 50-100% premium on ebay,)

By the way BTC went over $1000 just in 5 days in the new year making a 25% quick return YTD....
 
firm shutdown from treasury dept "suggestion", 2013 is the last year for those coins. They are collectibles now and worth 2-4x actuals depends on what type of casascius coins.
 
And this is why bitcoin is not ready for the prime time, when even a computer scientist can be robed:

I though my wallet was secured enough (BTC client + very long passphrase), I was too confidant... I even had prepared some paper wallet but waited to have them plastified...
And just few minutes ago: BAM! The BTC client showed the robbery transaction in the notification popup...

What can I do more than monitor this address?
it is really a strange mix of feelings...
first: SHAME,b being a computer scientist, and having documented myself A LOT before investing, I should have known better...
second: SCARED, I know, now, that all my computers and internet accounts are compromised...
third: SAD. Even if I only invested what I was willing to loose, so no big deal.
I know I was not careful enough. But frankly, I was still more careful than 98% of what the population will ever be. Andreas M. Antonopoulos is right when he says that we are not prepared enough for digital security...
SO everyone, please, don't overestimate your computer security!
TLDR; use offline paper wallet if you don't wanna become a fool!
EDIT : more details for educational purposes I used Bitcoin-QT encrypted with a long passphrase. BUT... I think I might have done a backup (dropbox or drive) before having done the encryption. It is the only failure I can think of. and it's a big one, I know :( I can only blame myself..."
 
1 clueless computer scientist and suddenly bitcoin isnt ready? It means nothing, there are plenty of idiot computer scientists. Healthcare.gov anyone? Or the team who built a bitcoin exchange on amazon cloud instance then shut off the instance and lost the wallet with 15k bitcoins lol

as i said earlier, it's very easy to secure your bitcoin wallet, just put it on separate usb in cold storage, only plug it in when need to send coins, so your wallet file is never on the computer, you can also further encrypt the wallet file if paranoid. There are also new opensource hardware ( http://www.bitcointrezor.com ) but that's overkill.

Well, it hasn't been ready for 4 years, so it is nothing new. :)
 
Apparently, people are trading the differences between alt coins, sometimes with not so much success:
