Humpy you have a good point. I reckon I could build some pretty good models with Dakota R/T if I create a O/H/L/C series normalized by volatility. I'd have to stay up most of the night to do / monitor the trading because I live in Sydney, Australia. It could well be the ticket to giving up the full time job though.

Well lets not take TOO long buddy ! Christmas will be here soon

This looks like a genetic algorithm that is designed to produce a better backfit of data. It would be interesting to see how the backfitted results of Dakota would compare to backfitted results of a simple one-dimension backfit of system on WealthLab or Metastock.

I personally like Genetic Algorithms. I especially like to watch them 'learn'. The Dakota program looks like it is only using bots with very few number of parameters that can be optimized. At then end of the run the results would not be much different than if you ran the same type of backtesting several times using Metastock's optimizer.

Dakota may make it easier to provide a backfitted results with a few clicks of the mouse. However, anyone want to tell me how they were surprised with the optimized parameters that were the result of one of the runs? Is this approach good enough so there is some 'discovery' of a new combination of parameters that were not considered without this swarm approach. I don't think so....

It looks way overpriced, and is targeted toward new users who do not yet understand how easy it is to produce a backfitted equity curve on any market. You do not need 'swarm', GA or Neural nets to produce these screens or these results.
This technology is dead. The professors who worked on the original research of this do not respond to questions. The website that supports the research for this technology is old and out-of-date.
Deadware.

Deadware.

Glad you think so. Dakota dos not backfit.

A number of Dakota users who have a local user's group in my area discussed publicizing Dakota or keeping quiet about it and not giving away an edge. You'll note I've never mentioned it here on ET. However ---

Carl Cook, the CEO of BiocompSystems, the producer of Dakota, is a very creative guy and is in the process of completely changing the internal machinery of Dakota, but not its operational concept.

James Slack-Smith (jalsck here on ET), is a frequent contributor to the internal Dakota forum and really does trade using Dakota.

Carl Cook offers product-use seminars and "developer jams" on Dakota at basically his cost. He is about to go to Australia to present to 4 users down there. The seminars are 2 1/2 days and always run long. I've attended one and the other guys in our local user's group attended two others. No one has had anything but good to say about them. The seminar fee - about $900 which will pay Carl's airfare.

As to the EOD versus Real-time versions of Dakota. EOD is now at version 2.1.18, RT at 1.3.39. RT is a newer product and is currently less versatile than EOD but Carl has 1.4 just about ready to release. Hopefully, he'll do it before he goes off to Australia.

Both EOD and RT require Visual Basic , C#, or C++ to really benefit. Without them you are restricted to the swarms that come with the system or that occasionally are made available by other users like James. I'm not very proficient with VB and am slowly learning how to write my own "swarms".

Support is excellent, but as previously noted, the up-front cost it is not cheap. But you sometimes get what you pay for, even in the investment/trading world.
