Billionaire trader John Arnold retires at 38

Quote from Grandluxe:

hes giving 3/4 of his wealth away

I read that too. That's pretty cool to be able to gift billions . Maybe he feels a little guilty for making some of it unethically, maybe not ,but it was a good story and shows the heights one can reach .

oil was down today without hardly one bounce too, few traders were chattering that he still had some positions to unwind but it was just chatter so take it for what it is.

It is good to see a rich man giving his money to others. More of them should do the same.

Funny you mentioned NG because I just looked at the quote a moment before I read your post. Down 8.5% today. Pretty fugly for some big hedge fund titans who own millions of shares.

I remember reading a while back how John Arnold did well taking the opposite position of Amaranth's Brian Hunter, who lost $6.5 billion on natural gas futures.

I knew professors who taught Brian. Had Brian made billioms from that hurricane season bet, we would be lauding him today not John Arnold

Sure these guys are talented... Way more than you or I, but let's not give them too much credit. Someone mentioned Monte Carlo. A simple Monte Carlo simulation ca. Bring out an excellent money manager.

We never hear of the losers. We alwsys need to sum over the histories of money managers... On average theirs is a losing bunch....

He made Enron 750 million when he was all of 25! Yeah, he did OK. Of course we have several guys here on ET trading FX that make that kind of money so take that for what it's worth. :)

hahaha, right...

there are people on ET who make 750mm???

if you believe that then i've got some ocean front property in Arizona I'd like to sell you

not really, Jonny was long and had much more upside to his trade. he wouldn't have lost near as much as what Brian did had it stayed flat or gone the other way

This is definitely one of the greatest trading runs of all time. Did great at a firm, then by himself, played an inefficient Market well on huge size, busted out his biggest competitor, then retired while massively ahead of the game.

I am curious what he does next. I bet he gets bored eventually and comes back to the markets. Sitting on cash gets boring after a while, and the lure of competing will return IMO.
game is so controlled now that the fed, banks, gs,jpm, can team up and just move the market against the whales..they know everyone's exact position..playing poker where the biggest guy can see your cards......whats the word ..they broke up att for it
