He did always say unfiltered things that got his viewer's wind up. Some of it is probably boredom. If I recall he was kicked from NBC? For saying it was cowardly to fire missiles from 2000 miles away but it was brave to fly a plane into a building yourself. He was always capable of rubbing fur the wrong way making an true enough if arguable point.
I don't know anybody other than yourself who would describe themselves as actively progressive though I'd agree with most things that appear progressive. The odd out-of-box thing like job guarantees seem unworkable and I'd expect Maher would have a go at this? Even if it makes sense its takes too long to explain how it might work.
