Bill Gates doesn't know poor Americans

So... here is the thing about your concept...

how do we know if doing something is better than just letting the virus run its course?
or at least waiting to do something until we have clarity?

think about this...

by shutting down you are ruining lives for sure but how many are you saving?
by not shutting down you may let the virus ruin lives anyway.

By shutting down you may slow the infection rate but are you changing the death toll?
Maybe its better for the individuals to have more of the population get exposed up front...

How do you know?

Come up with a plan (or pay experts to do so) to MITIGATE the epidemic. Sure we are going to take a hit, but will it be 10K people or 2 million? Will the economy go down or just have a spring break?

And after his TedTalk he was kind of an expert on epidemics. This was a giant fail on his behalf...
He had the resources and if he wants to talk to the Prez or a governor, they answer his call.

Mine, not so much...

Oh one more thing, the first outbreak happened in his fucking backyard, Seattle.
From that moment he should have been actively raising hell.

If the following is true, I think Bill Gates MISSED a huge opportunity back in December:

"Coincidentally, Bill hosted a coronavirus pandemic simulation in October 2019 with lots of bright minds. In their simulation, the virus started in China and spread all over the world. The simulation revealed that despite the best efforts of his think-tank gathering, they were unable to stop the coronavirus from killing millions.

Bill knew something was up in October 2019. And even his people couldn't stop a simulation. "

I don't get it. 2 months later China has a huge virus locking down 60 million people and Gates didn't buy full page ads bringing attention to the danger??? He has the money. He could have hired experts, come up with a contingency plan and presented it to the President or at least to the governors. Hell, he could have ordered 10K ventilators.

I am not saying we would have awakened earlier, but at least he could have tried. Or his experts. I am disappointed in Gates....

I never brought this up because I didn't do any DD... but its interesting that $MRNA went from $14 on 10/15 to $21 a month later.50%. I did look for news. There was none.
Why was that? Who the f ever heard of this stock before that. Volume was low too,
hmmmm

I never looked at the options, no reason to. Anyone smart wouldn't do it that way. Too easy to get caught.

I think you are responding in the wrong thread. I have a poll exactly about this topic in the Economics section.

My problem with Gates is not what he is doing now (although still not too sensitive advice) but what he could have done before and when Seattle was hit!!!

Had he raised hell after the nursing home got infected, maybe by now we would be 2-3 weeks ahead and we would have much less infection now. Trump wasted a whole month with the Democrat hoax BS. It is the prevention part where Gates failed. He could have helped to flatten the curve.

We might get political unrest, hell, even a revolution. Rich people are more afraid of those than the plague, pardon my pun.

So Bill is now criticizing the government (rightfully so). And I criticize Bill, also rightfully so:

https://www.geekwire.com/2020/shoul...ys-us-slow-covid-19-shutdown-now-unavoidable/

"Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said Tuesday morning that the U.S. acted too slowly and missed its chance to avoid mandatory stay-at-home orders to deal with the COVID-19 crisis, saying that “everybody should have taken notice back in January” when the first case was detected in Washington state."

Yeah Bill, where were you taking out full page ads in big newspapers or going on CNBC with your buddy Warren and warning us????

First of thanks for the discussion instead of going for the ad homs.

2. Gates' scenarios which seem to support his idea of the efficacy of a shutdown are that therapies can be developed in 2 to 3 weeks and a vaccine can come in 6 months.

I would completely agree if his time frames were realized. Shut it down get done... rebuild. No need to consider herd immunity.

But, Fauci and others talked about 18 months or more to a vaccine. Very different scenario.
If that is how long we are going to be shutdown... lives will be destroyed and lost due to the economic collapse. We will probably see world wide famines. Loss of the means of production and transportation are risks.... especially in the 3rd world.

3. So now I completely agree with you.
Gates set a mark which he needs to work towards hitting.
He needs to activate on this.
He has to rally private industry to get this done.
Therapies in 3 weeks. Vaccine in 6 months.

Are we talking about the same Bill Gates?

He is retired. Lives on Lake Washington. He and his wife run a philanthropic organization.

My friend used to be his helicopter pilot, erm one of them. He is low key with staff and pretty nice. The first time my friend picked up Bill and Melinda he was so excited that he flew off in a random direction. Bill reached up and tapped him on the shoulder and said "where are you going?" and he honked it around to the right heading.

Bill Gates isn't in charge of Seattle. He doesn't even live in Seattle. You guys act like he is responsible for disease response.

My bad.

I thought we were talking about the guy who gives TED talks, runs pandemic simulations with the world's experts, spends (gives) billions on world health and has the ear of leaders around the world.

If he did not want the responsibility he could be that low key retired guy and let someone else do the work he is doing. He could give the money to someone else to mange and play xbox. He probably has a free xbox live account.
