Biggest Winners and Losers from Alabama Senate Race

That is an area where the dems will try to read too much into it. This was a referendum on Moore, not Trump. Since the presidential election, Alabama voters move even further to the right by going with Moore rather than Luther, and then since then they many rejected moore due to their conservative values, not because they have become more lib.

The dems scored a victory, but dont kid yourself, it was due to Moore's problems and if the national election were held again tomorrow, Trump would win even bigger there. Luther Strange could have beaten Jones with very, very little difficulty. And Jones did not really get the "Clinton vote" he got the got the dem vote and Clinton was dem too.

Even Shelby, the other republican Senator, said he would not vote for Moore. The dems caught a highly unusual break and used it well. Don't get giddy just yet. Alabama is going to be looking for the first chance it gets to put a republican in there again and the voter base is a sea of red. Dems should be out there working every day though to improve the lives of blacks and other constituents rather than just taking them down off the shelf at election time. Try that for a while and if you make progress, well good then. Try earning it the old fashioned way like that.

Maybe, maybe not. I never liked this election as an indicator for a bunch of reasons but this was not an election where voters were turned off and turnout was low. turnout blew the doors off expectations. The consensus was 20-25% of the electorate would show up and it turned out to be 40%.

I’m not so sure Moore underperformed. He got a lot of votes and may have hit his target numbers. maybe he needed to overperform and couldn’t.

The media and establishment republicans are eager to blame Bannon for this and heap abuse on him. Their calculus is Strange would have easily won and the seat would be in safe (establishment)republican hands. But no, Bannon had to stick his nose in and of course they couldn't possibly be expected to support a candidate who supported Trump's agenda.

If they continue to think like that, it's probably curtains for them. Bannon's supporters are going to draw a very different lesson. They see a republican party that expects unquestioned support for its cuck candidates but which is prepared to cut and run at the first sign of trouble for a populist. If forced to choose between the seat being held by an anti-Trump, anti-wall, McConnell stooge or an anti-Trump anti wall dem, they probably pick the dem, who will be closer to them on economic issues. The tax bill proves beyond any doubt that republicans now are just the party of the Business Roundtable and have no trouble screwing their base.

allegations only
I guess you're right. So far as any one knows there is no actual video tape of the rape of the 14 year-old. Just allegations and a couple dozen corroborating witnesses who have stated that Roy Moore was attracted to under age girls, Moores own account of dating them, and that lie about being banned from the Mall.

Indeed. No pictures as we have of Ted Kennedy's car with the scratch marks on the inside of the roof.

Winner: Voter ID laws. Alabama's didn't disenfranchise voters. Big surprise.

Of course, if Moore had won, then the voter ID laws would have been an issue.

The Bannon populists will be out for blood now. They feel the party backstabbed them, which of course is exactly what happened. A number of senior party figures, headed by Alabama's other senator, said they couldn't vote for Moore. Just like with Trump's election, they actually wanted the democrat to win. They must be punished now.
