US crude benchmark West Texas Intermediate was up 32 cents to $78.82 per barrel, as of 08:00 GMT. International benchmark Brent gained 27 cents and was trading at $82.58 per barrel.

On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden announced the release of 50 million barrels of crude from the country’s emergency stockpile to battle rising gasoline prices.

The price of crude recorded its steepest daily decline since July on Friday as reports of the new heavily-mutated coronavirus strain raised concerns of fresh travel restrictions that could cripple fuel demand.

International benchmark Brent plunged more than 5%, to $77.76 a barrel by 09:55 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was down 6.6%, at $73.19 a barrel, after hitting a two-month low during the session.

Oil slid in tandem with financial markets on fears that the new variant, which was first detected in southern Africa, could slow economic growth if new restrictions are imposed.

Well of course there is a new variant requiring more tyrannical action against people. So many predicted this.

New shots will be required, new restrictions introduced, people put into camps, people prevented from shopping etc. More deliberate destruction of the economy as well.

Looking at history its clear that this will go on until there is wide-scale rebellion that results in new leadership but in some instances it will force new systems of governance.

There has not been an *serious* pandemic that did not trigger these events. All the F-15s and nuclear weapons in the world won't make any difference.

It looks like to me that Biden's plan A is working. Gasoline prices at the U.S. pumps dropped about 10% when Biden negotiated (got agreements) from other countries.

Now as a bonus with the help of a new Covid Variant of Concern threat...the price drop is picking up downward reaction to the new possible Variant of Concern. Yet, its the type of help the global markets really do not want because a new Variant of Concern will have a negative impact on global economies in prolonging the Pandemic.

Therefore, why did your article say it failed...is it because of the negative impact on global economies by the possible new Covid Variant of Concern from South Africa ???

If so, Biden has no control over what happens in South Africa and their public health agency policy.

Oil was too high to begin with relative to strength of the dollar/inventories. The whole market is taking the “nu” news to correct.
