The Difference...

Those guys at the 1968 Olympics whom Jesse Owens was being compared to...they did not have permission to protest at the Olympic Games whereas the athletes at the U.S. Olympic trials 2021 were given "permission" by the U.S. Olympic Committee to protest at the trials and permission to do such while standing on the podium even when the national anthem was played if they choose to do such.

Specifically, athletes of the 2021 Olympic Trials were told its OK if they wanted to kneel or raise their fists in the air on the podium to protest injustice in the United States or abroad.

I already posted a link in this thread about it in a prior message and it was not a document...the USOPC released a press release to the media and to all sport branches back in March 2021.

Yet, I'm sure you can contact Reuters (where I first saw it) and request an actual document from the USOPC that they released to Reuters about their agreement with the U.S. athletes.

Also, as stated in the press release from the USOPC...the agreement with the U.S. athletes was only for the Olympic Trials and that all athletes must still follow the rules of the Tokyo Olympics...as in no kneeling and no fists up in the air while on the podium...actually no protesting.

Also as stated in another prior message...the IOC has much more to worry about involving the protesting by the Japanese citizens concerning the Covid situation instead of worrying about athletes protesting about global injustices.

For the record, I'm not a fan of protesting on the Podium considering there's much more effective ways to protest at the Olympic trials, Olympic Games or any other sporting event.

Then again, that's where many are at...they were not allowed to utilize those other ways or attacked. Regardless, America was built on protesting against the British...they learned it well. :D

As a follow-up about the USOPC...

The USOPC's main sources of revenue are television broadcast rights, sponsorships and philanthropy in the form of major gifts and direct mail income.

I wouldn't be surprise if the USOPC felt more pressure from those that fund them considering they realized there are not going to be that many fans at the events of the competitions...they decided it was a good compromise to allow the athletes to express themselves instead of getting wild at the actual Olympic games...a fire point considering protesting will not be allowed at the Tokyo Olympics. :D
  • I read somewhere recently that due to Covid...the stands had about 50% of normal capacity...much of it for family and media.
Also, a lot of people do not know that there's a Team USA Council on Racial and Social Justice that was created in 2020 to support all athletes involving their concerns of injustice in the United States and to give the athletes support.
  • It was created by the USOPC and its Athletes Advisory Council.
As for the IOC...they press released the following...

Slogans such as “Black Lives Matter” will not be allowed on athlete apparel at Olympic venues, though it approved using the words “peace,” “respect,” “solidarity,” “inclusion” and “equality” on T-shirts.

I think the above is a fair compromise.

You praise him for being a good little boy when he got far worse treatment than any athlete today. He did what masah wanted him to do, salute the flag and be respectful and then came home and still was treated like shit and then you get upset when someone chooses to kneel as though their actions have no supporting facts from history.

When Blacks actred respectful you treated them like shit.
When Blacks marched in the streets in the 1960s to simply use the same restaurant as you, you used hoses and dogs on them.
When they protested at the Olympics you stripped them of their honors.
