Beyond Meat

I've been on a plant-based diet for about 4 1/2 months, so I've experimented with a lot of the meat substitute products that are out there. And you're right... The ground beef crumbles from Beyond Meat are garbage. They are flavorless and have a weird texture to say the least, and I would bet money that's what the lady used for her chili.

However, the Beyond Burger products are great. And by that, I mean the one that either has a couple of preformed burger patties in a container or the 1 lb block that you can make patties with yourself. I usually make one or two Beyond Burgers per week myself.

The burger product from Impossible Foods is my favorite though. When it's cooked right, it's hard to tell the difference between their burger and a traditional burger. We have a local gourmet restaurant that serves a kick-ass Impossible Burger but I don't get to eat it as often as I want because the restaurant is on the other side of town.

Seitan ground is a great meat substitute. I make it in Cuban style picadillo with brown rice and have had others try it to their amazement. Seitan is basically compressed wheat. I’m sure it would make a great chili.

I have had one or two beyond/ impossible burgers which I enjoyed very much but just can’t keep up with all the ingredients so not much of a fan.

Been seeing the commercials from BK about how their "burgers" made with this were so great and "tasted just like beef"*.

Well... I was at a party over the weekend where there was "Cincinnati chili" and a variant made with the beyond meat veggie thingy for the vegan crowd. One woman commented on how "great the vegan chili tasted". Having not tried BM** yet, I decided to give it a try.

Whoa! I was waaaayyy surprised. And while there is no accounting for personal preference, it was tasteless and had a gritty, unpleasant texture. I wouldn't feed that to my dog!

* Shouldn't have been surprised. BK commercials also touted their $1 tacos as "great", so I tried one. Took one bite and threw the rest into the trash. I've always been a fan of BK whoppers, as my waistline will attest... but these recent efforts to expand their menu are not doing them any favors in the culinary realm.

** wasn't initially intended to be a pun, but maybe turned out to be...

Beyond Meat? More like Beyond Belief!

FWIW...

Finally got around to trying an impossible burger at BK. Meh. Won't be ordering another.

Did it taste like a Whopper?

I bought a Whopper at the same time for taste comparo. No, it did not taste like the Whopper.

Maybe people think it tastes much like a Whopper because they're mostly tasting everything else that's on it.... bun, mayo, pickle ?

I took a bite of the non-meat, meat alone. Wasn't the worst veggie burger I've ever tasted, but then again I've never liked a single one.

Whatever voodoo chemistry they have to do to make this product doesn't convince me that it's healthy. I want vegetables I just eat a fucking vegetable.
