Beware of buying Pontiac, or any GM brand.

All arguing aside, I recently test-drove a 2009 Pontiac G8GT and absolutely and positively loved it! It's a sweet-handling car with great brakes and all the torque in the world from that L76 engine.

I thought it was a terrific blend of German-like composure and American muscle. The car is huge for those who like that kind of thing.

I am thinking that when Pontiac is officially discontinued (they were going to discontinue G8s anyway), I will jump in and snatch one of them G8GTs with a significant discount. Right now you can find them for $25000 or even slightly below. I wonder what they are going to be once the dealerships lose their contracts?
Even better would be picking up a G8 GXP (with a 6 spd MT) for around $30-$31K after discounts!!! :cool:

I find it just amazing that these american cars DO NOT hold any RESALE value what so everrrrrr.

I could care less for this car or any other american made car, I just find it so interesting that the g8 GXP priced at 38k is just crazy, after taxes and other fees you are paying over 40k for a car that in less than 4 years is worth no more than 18k. You know you can get a fully loaded Acura TL for that price, A4 3.2L or a G37S for that price, forget american, the car has no style what so ever thats why every brand that GM makes doesnt go very far.

G8 Sedan MSRP1 $29,000

* 3.6L Variable-Valve Timing DOHC V6
* 5-speed automatic with DSC and Sport Mode

G8 GT MSRP1 $32,505

* 6.0L V8 with 361hp and 385 lb-ft of torque
* 6-speed automatic with DSC and Sport Mode

# G8 GXP MSRP1 $38,360

* 6.2L V8 with 415hp and 415 lb-ft of torque
* Available 6-Speed Manual Transmission
* Exclusive 19" Wheels

You'll be lucky to get anywhere close to $5k in 4 years for that POS.

Buying a G8 GXP for right around $30k before TT&L will be very doable.......no one will be paying full MSRP for any Pontiac these days unless they are financially vacant. For those who are performance auto enthusiasts, the G8 GXP is a hell of a good package (better performance than a 540i for a LOT less money)..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrvFo2VosO0&feature=related

Once you ACTUALLY DRIVE a GXP it will make more sense why this car in on the radar for the V-8 powered enthusiast crowd. :)

I myself do GREATLY prefer the Holden HSV GTS version............ http://www.hsv.com.au/cars/Eseries/gts/gts.asp :eek: :cool:

Quote from DHOHHI:
The biggest reason for GM's troubles is the UAW.
Agree that the UAW managed to wangle ridiculous concessions out of GM and others. There was a news piece up here in Oshawa recently where a guy whose Dad and Grandfather worked at GM was interviewed. He also works there. He said that the shop steward came into his high school on graduation day and told him that if he went to work for GM, he could work 30 years and retire with a nice pension.

Now... why the hell a labourer should expect to work until he's 48 and then retire is beyond me, but that's the deal the union had cut with GM.

Having said that, the biggest reason for GM's demise is not the union. It's the fact that they couldn't make good cars at a competitive price. They could do one or the other, not both at the same time. Plain and simple. The only argument against that idea is that the American people didn't buy them, even though they were good, because... because... well, you would have to make something up and stick it in there.

Those were the days. Grew up with "wide-track" pontiacs.

I disagree. I think you're seriously under estimating and downplaying the power of the unions they have. Some of these guys get paid $75/hour to push a few buttons and they're not educated either. I can't imagine the kind of overtime they're getting as well. Unions are killers to corporation. That will also effect the quality control of the vehicles too.

Besides the unions, I think they make too many different models. And a lot of overlap. Why have an avalanche when people buy escalades. They do that with a lot of models and its wasteful. GM has a load of sub brands and then each of those car makers all have a lineup of different pickups, different suv's, cars, wagons. They should sell the cars people buy. People buy corvettes, they buy escalades, etc. If they only sold a few models like a few other car makers do they'd do much better.
