I privately host a copy of the IB API (from their website) pegged to a release that I trust and build code on that.

Can you please explain what do you mean by this? Are you speaking about tws API or something else?

On a somewhat unrelated note, I would advise the OP not to tie trading with IB's API. I'm at the mercy of IB since the alternative is months worth of coding and testing to move to an alternative. Use FIX or anything else that allows you to move to a competitor within days.

True. But tws API seems robust and the features it supports seems difficult with other technologies. Please correct if I am wrong
