Palm trees are green at the tips
I guess I spent too much time in the Southeast. I'm all greened out, not to mention the humidity. And it sounds like you don't know the climate of northern AZ. It's plenty green up there, and it snows, too, if you're into that sort of thing.
And the tax situation isn't bad at all in AZ. California, on the other hand, is getting out of hand.
Crime is bad in any big city. No getting away from that, other than what you have planned, living 50 miles or so away.
I like North Az a lot too. Ponderosa country. Problem is Sedona and Flagstaff are about the only cities. Sedona is expensive and Flagstaff is boring.
I grew up in the Southeast and moved here to San Diego in 1998. I went back to Atlanta for a year and then came back.
I moved back to Atlanta thinking I missed the trees, seasons etc. All those tall tree were almost claustophobic. I had gotten use to seeing the horizon, ocean and mountains out here and, well to hell with greenery. I will take the arid landscape with low humidity any day.
