Best book on Lifting

shortie,

I believe that this could help, but people give advice too freely on things that could potentially be beneficial to one person, and catastrophic to another. I also think this is super hard core. Fasting once or twice a year is one thing, regularly? I can't see myself fasting regularly. I do not doubt that it has some value, but it almost certainly puts a strain on some other part of my system.

I think once genome sequencing is super cheap, everyone will do it, and when we get smart about what sort of things we are most likely to benefit from, this could lead to a holy grail specialized exercise and longevity.

nitro, how about trying intermittent fasting and reporting back to ET with the results?

"Intermittent fasting
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Intermittent fasting (IF) is a pattern of eating that alternates between periods of fasting (usually meaning consumption of water only) and non-fasting. A specific form of IF is alternate day fasting (ADF), which is a 48-hour routine typically composed of a 24-hour fast followed by a 24-hour non-fasting period. (ADF is also sometimes referred to as every other day (EOD) fasting, or sometimes every other day feeding (EODF).)

There is some evidence that intermittent fasting may have beneficial effects on the health and longevity of animals—including humans—that are similar to the effects of caloric restriction (CR). There is currently no consensus as to the degree to which this is simply due to an (often) concomitant overall decrease in calories. (IF and CR are forms of Dietary Restriction (DR), which is sometimes referred to as Dietary Energy Restriction (DER).)

Scientific study of intermittent fasting in rats (and anecdotally in humans) was carried out at least as early as 1943.[1]"

There is no surprise to me in this. If I am a complete newbie, I will use say 20 lbs. As I tear muscle and it repairs and I get stronger, I doubt that I can still use 20 lb weights to tear the same muscle.

If this thing claims I can look like a body builder by always using small weights until I can't lift anymore, I think that may be silly, but I don't really know.

a pill that makes one cancer-resistant, lean and athletic appears to be possible for human (eventually) because this has already been accomplished in mice with resveratrol. what's interesting about resveratrol is that it apparently stimulates body's natural mechanisms and should not be dependent on the exact genome variant (=should work in most mice)

"Scientists recently showed that if you fed resveratrol to obese mice eating a high-fat diet, they'd stay as healthy and spry -- and live just as long -- as mice that were fed a low-fat diet and stayed lean. They also showed that mice fed resveratrol became super-duper athletes, running twice as far on little treadmills as their non-resveratrol-fed brethren." http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/booster_shots/2008/06/its-long-been-s.html

I take micronized resveratrol from revgenetics.com. 300mg twice daily, and formulated with HPMC to limit conjugation. Buccal delivery for 15 minutes, then swallowed. You can literally feel a mild buzz from it.

Lost 1.5 lbs this week. Now 7 lbs from target. It will be a huge psychological lift to see a seven instead of an eight in the tens place.

Almost all the gains I had made from lifting are starting to disintegrate. As I said, I stopped lifting so as not to work at cross purposes to losing weight. I am not too worried, since I decided that while my initial goal was to get to 175 lbs, I realize that I will probably have to give myself months if not a year to achieve the picture I have in my mind for myself. It's ok.

On a positive note, I am beginning to get my speed back. I am dying to try the track, but I have no delusions that if I actually got out there now, especially in this heat, I would not do well. Still...

I feel a little bit like Fast Eddie (although I am nowhere near as old as he is in this movie)

Vince: What makes you so sure?
Eddie: I'm back.

placebo effect? effect from additives? wiki says humans need to eat ton to get the doses equivalent to what works in mice

Definitely not placebic. Buccal is at least 100x more effective at reaching therapeutic plasma levels. The concern that the conjugated-forms are inactive, but it is now believed that the bulk of the in-vivo activity is attributable to the glucuronide and sulfate forms.

One way of administering resveratrol in humans appears to be buccal delivery, that is without swallowing, by direct absorption through the inside of the mouth. When one mg of resveratrol in 50 mL solution was retained in the mouth for one min before swallowing, 37 ng/ml of free resveratrol were measured in plasma two minutes later. This level of unchanged resveratrol in blood can only be achieved with 250 mg of resveratrol taken in a pill form.
