That's a bit of a reach. What I'm saying is his actions would be excused as not his fault and he'd get to live his life locked up in a mental institution is all. You know, the premise of the original argument.

There was an article a while back that covered the length of time criminals spend in a mental institution in the U.S. is under 5 years --- even for crimes like murder. Unless the criminal is a notorious figure widely covered in the media the time spend in an institution is usually short.

The drivers of this include a lack of state funding for mental illness, limited amount of space in secure mental institutions, and a rush to "rehabilitate" the mental cases with medication and counseling so they can be released as a matter of policy.

Sadly most of the murderers who get released go on to commit more violent crimes.

We put down mad dogs who harm people, eh? We should also lock up insane murderous criminals for life in secure prisons as a matter of policy. None of this - "the person is insane and not responsible for their actions so we can't lock them up in prison" nonsense.

This is not about regimes and political oppression; it is about the operation of the criminal justice system in a democracy. We don't preemptively punish people; we allow the criminal justice system to decide on an appropriate sentence for a crime. However the "insanity plea" is just a dodge to avoid taking responsibility for the crime and serving an appropriate sentence -- plus many of these murderous criminals are quickly released from "institutions" to commit more violent crime. It is time the citizens in our democracy demand an end to this nonsense.
