This Man Is the Most Dangerous Political Operative in America

Steve Bannon runs the new vast right-wing conspiracy—and he wants to take down both Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush.

On occasion, this partisan zeal has led to egregious errors. Just before our lunch in January, a Breitbart reporter published an article assailing Obama’s nominee for attorney general, Loretta Lynch—but went after the wrong woman. She wasn’t, as the site reported, the Loretta Lynch who was once part of Bill Clinton’s defense team. The embarrassed reporter asked for time off. Bannon, allergic to any hint of concession, refused: “I told him, ‘No. In fact, you’re going to write a story every day this week.’ ” He shrugs. “We’re honey badgers,” he explains. “We don’t give a s---.”

Just 2 cents:

Before announcing the 'temporary' travel ban, the US needs to 'secretly' focus effectively on some travellers from just the 7 countries for critical/extreme screening. Making the US safer, at least marginally!

But now with the 'temporary' travel ban announced publicly, due to actions and quick anger reactions strategically and pragmatically (just routing from other countries for both training and origin), the US would soon have to expand the screening to be applied to All countries and All travellers, including the US. Because simply and potentially, from now on, the suspects would not be coming Directly from these 7 countries anymore.

How many countries are to be banned in the next 4 years? All?!?

You are not making sense. From the presidential order -- citizens from these seven countries ** NO MATTER THEIR ROUTE OF TRANSIT ** are subject to the temporary ban. In the future they would be subject to extra screening -- no matter which counties they fly through to get to the U.S. I will note that none of the seven countries in the order have direct flights to the U.S.

There are international convention requiring countries to provide information about their travelers via automated computer systems. These seven countries were placed on the list by President Obama as high risk because they do not follow the conventions for sharing information. This is due to two reasons; some of these countries are war-torn with no effective central government (e.g. Syria). Others deliberately refuse to provide the information (e.g. Iran).

I will note that countries such as Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia fully follow international conventions for providing information about their travelers coming via plane & ship to the U.S. or other destinations.

Apparently the Secret Service issue them as a "pass of the day" type thing. There are various abstract shapes and colours. I guess they're harder to forge on short notice than a printed pass and more discreet.

That's exactly what it is. You'll see the agents themselves wearing similar pins, but with the Secret Service star emblazoned on them. They also have what's referred to as "soft pins" that are thin metal temporary lapel pins, with similar colors / patterns and (usually) a letter. Those are given out for people that need temporary access, with the letter indicating their clearance / role.

I ran a security department at a luxury hotel that had a number of visits from people that the Secret Service protected (I've met three Presidents and umpteen foreign heads of state). Typically we'd see high level staffers and foreign security personnel wearing hard pins like this one, people that were travelling with the VIP. Those of us at the hotel would get the soft pins, as would press in some cases, as well as anyone that needed access short term. (e.g. local staff from the embassy of the country that came out to participate in the visit of their head of state would usually be soft pinned, while the aides and staff that traveled with them would be hard pinned.) The hard pin vs. soft pin distinction was based on duration, not level of access.

I'm not sure how they do things at the White House, but in our case, it was often a per event thing versus a per day thing. We'd have the same pins for the duration of whomever's visit.

As far as the agents keeping it straight, it was just part of their morning briefing. I remember seeing a document posted on the wall in more than a few command centers that would (among other things), have pictures of the current pins.
